Welcome to Baker’s End, the latest Bafflegab range
and the very first episode, The King of
Cats. Tom Baker stars as Tom Baker in this off the wall feast of frolics
and fun written by Paul Magrs. This is very much the Tom Baker of the Doctor
Who Hornet’s Nest stories, also written by Paul, and listeners should expect a
strange vicar, a mysterious housekeeper (played by Susan Jameson) and much
strange shenanigans in the village of Happenstance. The fourth wall is also
pierced a few times and nearly trampled on once. Such is the crazy world of
Baker’s End.
The plot (if
there is one) centres on Suzy Goshawk, played
completely straight by Katy Manning. Katy has also played another Paul Magrs
character in the past – time travelling Iris Wildthyme. In this story Katy’s
character is a far remove from Iris and acts as the lynchpin around whom the
story happens.
So, the
story: it’s nearly Christmas and actors have gathered for the funeral of Tom
Baker. Have no fear, being dead doesn’t inhibit Tom’s appearance in any number
of flashbacks. As matters progress Suzy tries to solve the mystery of the King
of Cats, and avoid getting shot by lasers or falling foul of a curious
sproinging creature. All very mad but great fun. Of course the story never
makes the mistake of getting in the way of the madness, but there is a lot of
going on and hints of deeper events and things to come.
Bafflegab released
The King of Cats on September 2nd, 2016; full details are
available on their website for this
and the rest of this series.
It may not be
to everybody’s taste, but if you liked Hornet’s Nest or want some slightly
surreal adventure, this is worth giving a try. The next part, Gobbleknoll Hall
will be released in November.
