THE ART OF TOY STORY 4 / PUBLISHER: CHRONICLE BOOKS / RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW
To paraphrase the opening introduction when you mention Toy Story 4 is being made only one of two things come to mind the first overwhelming joy, the second is that they ended it so well with Toy Story 3.
The Art of Toy Story 4 has some truly great images it’s as much a book for art lovers as it is for movie fans. One of the highlights in the book is seeing the Pixar process; just how they design their characters and the challenges they face when making a film like this. For example, seeing just how many designs they come up with for each character, what they use as reference material, and just how many end up on the cutting room floor.
On page 38, there is an image that shows the amount of imagination that goes into getting these characters to move and how they interact with the objects within their world. The imagery in the book varies from pastel and pencil drawings to highly detailed computer imaginary depicting different stages of scenes. There are a mixture of concept art from the film, including unused concept art with text describing deleted or unfinished scenes the audience will never see. As this is primarily an art book, there’s not a great deal of text other than a forward and introduction, with only some small explanatory text accompanying the artwork.
For those of you who are concerned with this book giving away vital parts of the movie, rest assured it doesn’t. If anything it is more of a companion to the movie which gives you a taste of some of the things to come. Having read The Art of Toy Story 4, the movie really can’t come soon enough.
To infinity and beyond.
