COMIC BOOK REVIEW: ALONE FOREVER: THE SINGLES COLLECTION / AUTHOR: LIZ PRINCE / ARTIST: LIZ PRINCE / PUBLISHER: TOP SHELF PRODUCTIONS / RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW
This charming collection from Liz Prince’s mostly autobiographical web comic, available at http://lizprincepower.com, collects the strips relating just to her adventures in dating, or attempting to date, as a sometimes socially awkward, sometimes fierce, cat owning, shut-in with an infatuation for bearded man in flannel shirts.
Over the course of a mixture of 3-panel comic strips, single page images and a smattering of tales spanning multiple pages (all in black and white), Alone Forever documents Liz’s brief yet dramatic history with online dating service OK Cupid, illustrations of her occasional loneliness, her sporadic loathing of couples, and her eternal love for her cats.
Prince’s style is simple and clean but conveys just the right level of heart and whimsy when dealing with brief accounts of attempting to start a conversation with someone you like, the perils of explaining your feelings to a crush, as well as dealing with people who simply don’t get you. While there are moments of melancholy, they are more than outweighed by the often absurd sense of humour and self-deprecating style that means things never get too dark.
At 106 pages long, many consisting of mostly white space, the book will not take long to get through, but should rather be dipped in and out of when seeking some solace for when that random hot guy/girl avoids your glances, to save the embarrassment of a weird in-joke conversation being heard by out of contexts by a random passer-by, or just when you want to share in someone else’s love of cats.
