The Final Chapter, right? Seemingly not.

Despite this year’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter being billed as, well, the final chapter, it appears that we’ve not seen the last of the Resident Evil franchise. As per Variety, the series is actually set to get a reboot.

The outlet reports that Martin Moszkowics, the chairman of Constantin Film, revealed the news at this past weekend’s Cannes Film Festival. No details are known in regards to who will direct or star in this reboot, and it’s not known how, if at all, the film will fit in with the existing franchise.

To date, Resident Evil is the most successful series in history when it comes to adapting a video game property for the big screen, having earned over $1.2 billion in total with Paul W.S Anderson directing and Milla Jovovich starring.

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time we’ve been given a non-final “final” outing for a franchise, with Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter proving to be just the fourth of a franchise that has had ten movies, a crossover, a reboot, and another rejig currently in development. Then there’s Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, a film that was the sixth in a franchise that had seven main pictures, a crossover, a reboot, and now, like Friday the 13th, another redo in development. And obviously there are a whole host of other films out there that weren’t quite as “final” as their titles would have you believe.

As ever, expect more on this Resident Evil reboot as it develops.
