Last week came word that Jack Huston was a new frontrunner to head-up Marvel Studios’ DOCTOR STRANGE, which will be directed by SINISTER’s Scott Derrickson. At one point, Joaquin Phoenix was apparently being lined up to play the Sorcerer Supreme. That talk seems to have died down, and there’s some news on just why that is.

Accordingly to Badass Digest, the biggest stumbling block in Phoenix taking on the role was the prospect of the actor signing a multiple-picture deal. It’s not unheard of for some of Marvel Studios’ stars to be tied to five, six, or seven-picture deals. In fact, it’s thought that Sebastian Stan even signed a nine-picture contract. Such a deal can be restrictive to talent, and it seems that this is the biggest concern of Phoenix’s. It’s also claimed that he isn’t massively keen on the large amount of green screen work that would be required for such films.

With DOCTOR STRANGE seemingly set to be released on July 8th, 2016, we’d expect to hear some casting news shortly on who will be playing the Master of the Mystic Arts.
