A promising first-look image from M. J. Bassett’s sword-and-sorcery feature Red Sonja, which stars Matilda Lutz as the titular character, has just been unveiled.

In the photo, Lutz stands ahead of a fiery background as she rests her sword over her shoulder. And while we may not be able to see the full armour, it thankfully doesn’t look as though the studio has opted for Red Sonja’s famous bikini armour.

The feature is adapted from Dynamite Entertainment’s comic book series of the same name, based on a heroine created by Robert E. Howard and adapted by Roy Thomas. The so-called “She-Devil with a sword” was also played by Brigitte Nielsen in the 1985 film Red Sonja, which co-starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as High Lord Kalidor.

Filming on this Red Sonja reboot feature is currently underway in Bulgaria, though plot details are being kept tightly under wraps. The ensemble cast includes Robert Sheehan as Draygan, Michael Bisping as Hawk, Martyn Ford as General Karlak, Eliza Matengu as Amarak, Oliver Trevena as Tr’aal, and Wallis Day as Red Sonja’s wicked half-sister, Annisia. M.J. Basset (Ash vs Evil Dead, Solomon Kane) helms the feature. Jill Soloway was previously attached to write and direct, but will now receive an executive producer credit.
