We all know that, yes, sadly Game of Thrones will be coming to an end in just a matter of years, but there’s been talks of some sort of spin-off or prequel series in the future, and now it’s been revealed that there have indeed been talks over a prequel for this much-loved show.

Variety asked HBO’s Casey Bloys, who is responsible for the network’s programming schedule, about the chances of us seeing a prequel series that looks to mine from the thousands of years of history established by George R.R. Martin’s source material. Bloys explained, “I would say it’s still kind of preliminary ongoing talks. There are areas we are exploring, but I wouldn’t point to any one and say, ‘This is what we’re going to do.’”

Where things stand currently, Game of Thrones will premiere its seventh season next summer. Following that, there’ll be just one more season before the show calls it a day after eight seasons. That means that, with shorter seasons ahead than what we’ve seen before, there’s only thirteen episodes left for one of modern TV’s most iconic series.
