The first 20th Century Fox film to begin production under the new Disney ownership has been announced by Fox to be the adventure comedy, Free Guy.

The company took to Twitter to announce the project which is being helmed by director Shawn Levy, best known for his work on Stranger Things and the Night at the Museum series. We recently spoke to Shawn about the upcoming third season of Stranger Things (full interview in Issue 462) and during the interview, he was able to talk briefly about his next film Free Guy and said the following:

“It stars Ryan Reynolds as a man who discovers that he’s a background character in a video game. If I do my job right, it’s your favourite movie of next Summer. Also, Ryan stars alongside Joe Keery and Taika Waititi.”

Joining Ryan, Joe and Taika in the ensemble cast will be Killing Eve star Jodie ComerLil Rel Howery and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Mulan).

This will be Shawn Levy’s first directorial feature since Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb back in 2014. Levy is also serving as a producer on the film alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schnechter and Adam Kolbrenner. Currently, Reynolds and Zak Penn (Ready Player One) are being rumoured as screenwriters after an apparent re-writing of an original script by Matt Lieberman.

Free Guy is scheduled for release in cinemas on July 3rd 2020. More news to come as it’s announced.
