Despite being well-received by many, it looks as if CBS’ Supergirl could be in some trouble.

The Wrap is reporting that major talks are ongoing over the future of the Melissa Benoist-starrer, with CBS and Warner Brothers frantically negotiating over where the show goes from here. Whilst CBS is happy to renew the series for a second season, it appears that the main issue centres on the cost of the show.

To produce a single episode of Supergirl currently costs nearly $3 million, and the network feels that the cost isn’t quite worth the ratings that the show brings in. When the series debuted last October, the premiere pulled in an impressive 13 million viewers. Over the course of its debut season, which has now concluded in the US, the show saw half of that number stop watching.

With CBS set to announce their 2016/2017 schedule in a fortnight’s time, all should become clear then. As mentioned, the network does want to renew Supergirl but just not at the cost currently being forked out. Interestingly, if talks break down and CBS ultimately don’t option a Season 2, Warner Brothers are more than open to taking the show to The CW, the same network which houses Arrow, The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Of course, Grant Gustin’s Flash recently cameoed in an episode of Supergirl, so a move to The CW could well be a great move for the series.

As ever, expect more on all of this as and when it develops. Either way, it promises to be an interesting few weeks for the Maid of Might.
