With a principal cast and director now in place, the long-awaited adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s comedy horror novel PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES is finally set to begin filming.

On the vague off chance you’re unaware, and the somewhat self-explanatory title doesn’t give it away, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES mixes Jane Austen’s classic tale of love affairs traversing the rigid social strata of Regency England with battles against the marauding undead (or “unmentionables”). In light of the uprising, as well as being taught the etiquette that dictates the acceptable behaviour of young ladies in the 19th century, Elizabeth Bennett and her sisters have also been trained to be formidable ninja warriors, just as adept with katanas, knives and shuriken as they are at ballroom dancing and embroidery.

Lily James (WRATH OF THE TITANS; DOWNTON ABBEY) and Sam Riley (BYZANTIUM; MALEFICENT; FRANKLYN) will play the class-crossed lovers Elizabeth and Mr Darcy. While Bella Heathcote (DARK SHADOWS) has been cast as one of Elizabeth’s sisters, presumable elder sibling Jane, and Jack Huston (BOARDWALK EMPIRE; EASTWICK; OUTLANDER) is also in talks for a role, most likely either the charming and noble Bingley or the caddish militiaman Wickham.

Burr Steers (IGBY GOES DOWN; CHARLIE ST CLOUD) will direct the film and has also co-written the screenplay with David O Russell (AMERICAN HUSTLE; SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK).

The first of the historical mash-up literary subgenre, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES sparked a brief trend of fusing history and classic literature with genre fiction. A movement that subsequently gave us works of varying quality such as SENSE AND SENSIBILITY AND SEA MONSTERS, ANDROID KARENINA, QUEEN VICTORIA: DEMON HUNTER and ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER, which was itself turned into a mildly successful film.

Are you looking forward to this, or is it a zombie tale too far? Not keen on the classic books being messed with? Or maybe you love those stuffy old books getting a dose of blood? Let us know through the usual channels.
