With Birth of the Dragon starting principal photography today, The Wrap is reporting that the film has cast Philip Ng as Bruce Lee. Ng is likely best known for martial arts-heavy affairs such as Once Upon a Time in Shanghai and Naked Soldier.

The film itself will focus on the legendary ‘60s battle between a young Bruce Lee and Shaolin Master Wong Jack Man. We’ll see the story of the fight from the viewpoint of a young martial arts student who is torn between Lee and Wong Jack Man as the pair get set to fight in a famous battle that many still argue over who won to this day. It was after that fight that Lee would reinvent his style and go on to become the legend that he’s now remembered as.

The Adjustment Bureau’s George Nofli is directing, and he said of the film, “Birth of the Dragon is a rare opportunity to make an action film with rich characters based on real events and real people. It’s a story about people from the East and the West transcending their differences to work together, which is obviously a very timely story.”

Joining Ng on the film will be Yu Xia as Wong Jack Man, Billy Magnussen as Steve McKee, Jinging Qu as Xiulan, the love interest of McKee, and Jin Xing will be the film’s villainous presence, crime boss Auntie Blossom.
