A campaign has been launched this week by a group aiming to have a life-sized statue of Patrick McGoohan, star of 60s cult TV series The Prisoner, erected in the show’s North Wales original location, Portmeirion. McGoohan played an ex-secret agent, trapped in a mysterious village from which he can never escape, and a group of fans are now determined to raise funds for a permanent monument to the great man.

Dave Miles has formed ‘Team 6’ (in a nod to McGoohan’s character, who was only ever referred to as ‘Number Six’), and is aiming to raise £90,000 for a 6 foot 2 inch bronze statue of McGoohan, in character, being escorted by ‘Rover’ (the big white sinister balloon; guardian of ‘The Village’). Rover will also light up at night time. Dave is a man on a mission:

Sounds good, doesn’t it? About 6 months ago an idea popped into my head; imagine a life size bronze statue of Patrick McGoohan as No.6, with a life-size Rover next to him, and rover lights up at night. Wow!

Mr Miles has Portmeirion village on board, as well as Six of One (The Prisoner appreciation society), and the McGoohan family:

Catherine (McGoohan’s daughter) replied, speaking on behalf of all the family, she shared their joy at my plan. ITV also gave us their blessing.

Patrick McGoohan statue design by Sean Hedges-Quinn

The renowned Sean Hedges-Quinn has been commissioned to create the sculpture. The Patrick McGoohan Statue Campaign has now been launched, and there is a website where donations can be made via a donations button/link. Donations can also be made by cheque (made payable to ‘The Patrick McGoohan Statue Campaign’, and sent to Mr Stephen Woods – Team 6 Treasurer, “Parkview”, 5 Chelsea Mews, Owen Road, Lancaster LA1 2AS). For those with deep pockets, Team6 have a few rewards to offer:

There is also a wonderful package for major sponsors who donate £5,000+. Each major sponsor will receive a special invite to the event, a special certificate signed by Catherine McGoohan and the sculptor, Team6 introductions to Catherine McGoohan and Sean Hedges-Quinn, and have their name or company name permanently on the thank you statue plaque (limited space). And, lastly, be the proud owner of a very Limited Edition maquette of the statue. If you would like to donate please go to thepatrickmcgoohanstatuecampaign.com and also at www.sixofone.co.

Six of One has issued their own statement:

Our members will be delighted about the statue proposal and we wish the campaign every success. Patrick McGoohan was our Honourary president for over 30 years and to have a life-size representation of the actor “‘n the Village’ will be the perfect place for his Number Six character to be located and we hope never escapes!
