Elizabeth Tulloch is the Arrowverse’s Lois Lane

Elizabeth Tulloch Lois Lane

After last month saw us find out that Tyler Hoechlin’s Man of Steel would be returning to the Arrowverse for this December’s annual superhero show crossover, it was also revealed that Lois Lane was going to be joining this shared realm for said crossover. And now, we have word on who’ll be playing this iconic comic book character.

As per The CW, Grimm’s Elizabeth Tulloch has landed the Lois gig. We’ve seen Lois’ sister Lucy appear in Supergirl and the character herself has been namedropped at several points, but now we’ll finally get to see Lois Lane alongside Superman.

On this news, executive producers Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner enthused, “We couldn’t be more excited to introduce Lois Lane to the Arrowverse. This dogged, determined and brave reporter will make for a strong partner to Superman and amazing addition to our universe of DC characters.”

If The CW can get Lois even half as right as they have the Big Blue Boy Scout, we should all be in for a treat. While many have been left so-so on the cinematic outings for Henry Cavill’s Superman, Tyler Hoechlin’s Supes appearances in Supergirl have been absolutely pitch-perfect to date; capturing the hope and humanity of Superman and making you again realise why he’s such a beloved pop culture figure.

This year’s Arrowverse crossover begins with The Flash on December 9th, although this year’s event will only be made up of three episodes rather than the regular four. For this year’s crossover, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is being skipped over for once. In addition to bringing in Superman and Lois Lane, of course, the crossover will also mark the Arrowverse debut of Ruby Rose as Kate Kane/Batwoman.

First Look at Joaquin Phoenix in JOKER

Joaquin Phoenix Joker

Well, we didn’t expect to be getting a first look just yet, but this past weekend has seen a first official glimpse of Joaquin Phoenix in Joker.

Director Todd Phillips took to his social media channels to release the below shot, while JustJared also managed to get hold of some images from the film’s set:

Joaquin Phoenix Joker

Titled simply Joker, the movie will exist outside of the DC Extended Universe, instead being the first picture from the DC Dark banner of more adult-driven comic book films being developed by Warner Brothers.

Set in the ‘80s, Joker will be an origin story for the titular Clown Prince of Crime. Already pegged as a mixture of Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, Phoenix will be joined by Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, and Marc Maron in the movie.

At present, Joker is booked in for an October 4th, 2019 release.

ZOMBLOGALYPSE Feature Wraps Principal Photography

ZOMBLOGALYPSE

The cult zombie team of Zomblogalypse have wrapped principal photography on the feature version of the comedy horror web series. The movie – a co-production between MilesTone Films, One&Other Creative, Grunt Productions and Whixie Flix, was shot over the course of the summer in and around York, taking in nearby locales such as the Golden Ball pub, the Ritz Cinema in Thirsk and York city centre, through which our heroes speed in a American muscle car, with hundreds of zombies falling prey to the trio’s menagerie of weapons.

For co-creators and directors Hannah Bungard, Tony Hipwell and Miles Watts, who play the three hapless survivors of a zombie apocalypse, the movie has been a real labour of love. Originally developed through a sales agent and Hollywood film studio, the team made the film independently working with some of the cast and FX crew of their friends’ Dark Rift Films, who scored recent success at FrightFest with the comedy horror Book Of Monsters.

“It was a pretty crazy shoot,” says Hannah Bungard. “We enlisted the help of dozens and dozens of friends and businesses to play zombies and help out with the logistics of location, transport and catering. In the end it was a real community effort and we’re indebted to the city and people of York for helping us make the film happen.”

Zomblog is something that we just had to do our own way,” says Miles Watts. “There are other films on our slate that we can take through the studio system but Zomblog is an odd beast: semi-improvised and anarchic as was the web series.”

Zomblog the movie was shot mostly in York – including Bishophill, York Library and the old Environment Agency building which both doubled as the Zomblog flat interiors and exterior, and York Maze Hallowscream, which served as the location for a major action sequence. The anarchy of the shoot also bled into the filming techniques used by the crew.

“The film is incredibly meta and demanded a number of different cinematic styles so we used a wide range of cameras to communicate the different viewpoints,” says Tony Hipwell. “We’ve primarily shot with the Panasonic EVA1 and GH5 as well as GoPro and Mavic Pro. The original series had a very frenetic, unconsidered quality to it that we wanted to honour, but at the same time evolve for the big screen so we’ve adapted the found footage approach of the series in some really interesting ways.”

Gore FX was provided on set by Paul and Mark Wilkins of DDFX Studios, who created a slew of slavering zombies from made up humans to busts and dummies that could be bashed and destroyed by the team. “The FX guys were so brilliant,” says Miles. “It’s easy enough to write gore gags in a script but translating them to reality is a skill these guys have in buckets. The gags walk that Evil Dead line of cartoony and horrific, so you’re seeing something you know can’t be real but it’s really there and people really did get covered in slimy blood.”

The film now goes into post-production until spring 2019, when the Zomblog team are planning a weekend or two of pick-ups, to shoot extra scenes and fine tune the edit. “We’ve got the bulk of the film in the digital can but there’s one big sequence in particular we’re saving for the new year that will be a lot of fun as well as some smaller scenes we realised we needed whilst shooting, on top of anything the rough cut reveals” says Tony.

“After that, the plan is to submit the film to some high-profile film festivals and sell it to a distributor,” says Hannah. “It’s very mainstream and very silly, and also appeals to horror nuts: we have a huge cult following from the horror community and have been really welcomed by them. They’re a cool bunch and have totally championed Zomblogalypse. It’s a great family to be a part of.”

Keep up to date with the movie’s progress and watch the web series at Zomblogalypse.com as well as the Facebook page which is now a 2500+ strong community.

Adam Green Has Plans for More HATCHET Movies

Hatchet 3

With Adam Green’s Hatchet having its UK premiere on Horror Channel tonight, director Green has moved to confirm that plans are afoot for more outings for Victor Crowley.

Speaking to Horror Channel about planning out the early stages of the franchise, Green explained, “A major reason why the Hatchet sequels have succeeded is that they were planned out from the very start. In the first film, I actually showed some of the weapons that Victor Crowley wouldn’t actually use until the later films and I held back crucial elements of his mythology to be revealed later on down the road. Of course, it was a risky move given that there was no way of knowing if I’d ever get to make the sequels.”

On bringing Kane Hodder’s Victor back for more movies, Green added, “Originally, I had only planned for Hatchet to be a trilogy. But when I decided to bring Victor Crowley back for more, I planned out another complete roadmap for where it could all go. With the success of Victor Crowley [as in, the fourth movie in the franchise] it looks like I’ll once again be able to make the sequels I have planned. I’ve been able to stay in love with Victor Crowley because I only head back into the swamp when I’m ready to do so. Given that Hatchet is a cult franchise and not a studio property, my crew and I have always been able to make each film only when we want to.”

As ever, expect more on the future of the Hatchet series as we get it.

In the meantime, Hatchet will premiere on Horror Channel this evening at 9pm.

Aaron Paul Saddles Up for WESTWORLD

Aaron Paul

With HBO’s Westworld currently putting together its third season, the must-see show has moved to add Aaron Paul to its ranks.

HBO themselves confirmed the news, although there’s no word on which role the Breaking Bad, The Path, and BoJack Horseman favourite is playing in Westworld.

No major details are known on Westworld’s third year at this stage, although if it’s anything like the series’ previous two seasons then we should be in for something truly special. Despite many not being sold on the idea of a Westworld TV show in the first place, the series has gone on to become one of the best shows to come around in years.

As ever, expect more on Westworld’s return as we get it.

AMC Has Plans for a Decade More of THE WALKING DEAD

The Walking Dead

Despite treading water for the past few seasons and seeing its viewing figures steadily decline, AMC’s The Walking Dead is still a ratings monster. And it looks as if the genre juggernaut won’t be going away any time soon.

According to AMC’s Josh Sapan, there are currently plans afoot for another decade of The Walking Dead and its world. As Sapan put it, “The Walking Dead is a universe, and we have a plan to manage over the next decade plus. That plan is a careful plan to respect the world of the fans of that world.”

Whether those plans include running the main The Walking Dead series for another decade or more remains to be seen, but there’s always the option to add another shared realm show or two into the mix ala Fear the Walking Dead.

The upcoming ninth season of The Walking Dead is certainly going to be shaking things up, with mainstays Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan both getting set to depart the series. Lincoln’s Rick Grimes has been the focal point of the show since it began, where Cohan’s Maggie Rhee has been a key figure since debuting in the series’ second year.

As alluded to, despite falling ratings, The Walking Dead is still one of the most watched shows on the box. It just stands to be seen whether it can return to the tense, engaging storytelling of its earlier seasons that marked this out as can’t-miss, must-see TV.

Shane West Joins GOTHAM

Shane West

As Gotham gears up for its fifth and final season, the genre fave has brought in Nikita’s Shane West.

Courtesy of Deadline, West will playing Eduardo Dorrance, an old friend of Ben McKenzie’s Jim Gordon. Dorrance will turn up in Gotham City with a group of elite soldiers who are tasked with cleaning up the muggy landscape of the city. That’s not all, mind, for Dorrance will have a darker side to him – much like many who pass through Gotham.

For what it’s worth, in the comics there’s an Edmund Dorrance who just so happens to be the father of Bane and also go by the moniker of King Snake. Whether Eduardo Dorrance is Gotham’s spin on Edmund Dorrance, we’ll have to wait and see.

Gotham returns to screens in January.

Henry Cavill Reportedly Done with SUPERMAN

Superman Henry Cavill

Just when they finally got him right…

Yes, as the title suggests, after three movies, it looks as if Henry Cavill’s time as the Man of Steel has come to an end.

Courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill and Warner Brothers are seemingly parting ways. The studio had been doing their utmost to get Cavill’s Superman to cameo in next April’s Shazam!, although scheduling conflicts meant that wasn’t possible. With talks breaking down over that appearance, Warners has reportedly closed the book on this latest cinematic incarnation of the Big Blue Boy Scout, as they instead look to switch their attention to the recently announced Supergirl movie.

The initial report on this is that with Supergirl set to centre on a teenage superheroine, that would essentially remove Superman from the equation as he’d be an infant. We guess it depends on just how far back you’re going, though.

For those unaware, Kara Zor-El/Supergirl is actually older than Kal-El/Superman when Krypton goes kaput. Both sent on their respective paths to Earth, Kara’s trip takes just a tad while longer – meaning that when she does crash-land on Earth, Kal is now a fully-grown adult going by the moniker of Superman.

If Supergirl is to feature a Kara young enough to make Kal merely an infant or young child, we guess that kind of means the picture would have to be set pre-Krypton’s explosion. Well, unless some sort of creative license is taken. Anyways, we’re giving ourselves a headache – but the crux of the matter seems be that the plans for a cinematic Supergirl is what’s caused Warners to take their focus off Henry Cavill and his Man of Tomorrow.

To allude on what we opened with, fans were finally given the Superman they’d be yearning for by the time the hero was resurrected in the so-so Justice League. After Man of Steel and Batman v Superman struggled to grasp the fundamentals of what make Superman the greatest shining light in the comic book world, Justice League gave us a Supes who was note-perfect. And now, faster than a speeding bullet, it looks as if that is the last we’ll see of this incarnation of the character.

With Warner Brothers looking at rejigging/resetting their DC Extended Universe, it appears as if their Man of Steel is going to be another victim of this shake-up – much like Ben Affleck’s time in the cape ‘n’ cowl of Batman look numbered. As has been discussed before in great detail, it could well be that the 2020 solo movie for Ezra Miller’s Flash is used to change the DCEU or to even incorporate an alternative timeline.

Expect more on all of this as we get it.
