Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered coming later this year

Those of a certain age will no doubt shudder when thinking about Ghostbusters videogames. The original titles back in the mid 80s / early 90s were confusing, difficult and generally not really worth the hassle, apart from 1990’s imaginatively-named Ghostbusters on the Sega Mega Drive. Fast forward to 2009, and Ghostbusters: The Video Game surprised us all – with full voice acting from the original ‘Busters cast, and input from Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis on the scripting side of things, it was actually very good indeed. But despite a fairly warm reception from fans and critics alike, word didn’t seem to spread too far and the game pretty much slipped into the realms of “cult classic” territory.

The folks at Saber Interactive have announced Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered is set to be released later this year, allowing those who missed out at the time – or indeed anyone who just fancies having some supernatural current-gen willies putting up them – to reunite with the Ghostbusters crew and save Manhattan from some good old mysterious forces.

With the entire original game being cleaned and polished from the ground up, it’s certainly one of our most anticipated re-releases of the year. Wonder if they’ve had chance to squeeze in a part for Sigourney Weaver? Poor Dana missed out on the original, due to taking too long to make up her mind about whether or not she wanted to take part – by the time she said yes, the developers said no… It sure would be nice to finally add her to the cast though. Either way, check out the new trailer below, and keep an eye out for futher news in the coming months!

Joel Kinnaman Returning for SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel

Joel Kinnaman Rick Flag Suicide Squad

While it was believed that the majority of Suicide Squad’s cast would be returning for 2021’s follow-up offering, we now have definite confirmation of the return of a certain member of Task Force X.

Taking to his Instagram page, Joel Kinnaman has revealed that he will indeed be returning as Suicide Squad leader Rick Flag for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

Written and directed by Gunn, The Suicide Squad – yes, the sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad is titled The Suicide Squad – will be both a follow-up and a soft reboot of sorts for the property.

As alluded, the majority of that 2016 movie’s cast are expected to be returning to action this time out, although we do know that Margot Robbie and Will Smith will not be a part of The Suicide Squad. Already confirmed to return are Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, whilst David Dastmalchian has been cast as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior will play Ratcatcher, Idris Elba has landed a mystery role, and WWE star John Cena is rumoured to be joining the film.

The Suicide Squad is currently booked in for an August 6th, 2021.

KINGSMAN 3 to Wrap Things Up for Eggsy and Harry

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

While up next for the franchise is prequel offering Kingsman: The Great Game, we now have an update on the already-confirmed continuation story of Taron Egerton’s Eggsy.

The aforementioned The Great Game is set for a February 2020 release, but Matthew Vaughn has long since revealed plans for a straight-up Kingsman 3 – and a Kingsman TV series, for that matter – to arrive at some point over the next few years.

Now, speaking to Digital Spy, Vaughn has explained how Kingsman 3 will actually be the end of the line for Egerton’s Eggsy Unwin and Colin Firth’s Harry Hart.

As Vaughn put it, “We’ve got to finish off the Eggsy and Harry relationship. The final chapter of their relationship needs to be told, which we’ve got ready to do, and I’m hoping to shoot that later this year or the beginning of next year.”

By the time that 2017’s The Golden Circle had come to a close, Eggsy married the Crown Princess of Sweden, Harry was back fighting the good fight once more, and Channing Tatum’s Agent Tequila had also joined forces with the Kingsman agency.

At this stage, there’s no set release date for Kingsman 3, although one would have to expect it late-2020 at the earliest if Vaughn does indeed get cameras rolling before this year is out.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Pushed Back to 2020

Sonic the Hedgehog

Following some pretty damning feedback, it’s now been revealed that Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie won’t be speeding to the big screen quite as soon as we’d thought.

Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler has taken to Twitter to reveal that the film has been pushed back by three months in order to make Sonic look “just right”.

In case you missed it, the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was met by a fair amount of backlash that was largely based around the look of the titular Blue Blur. As such, the November 2019 release date has been pushed back to a new February 14th, 2020 date that will see the picture open against Kingsman: The Great Game and The Photograph.

In Sonic the Hedgehog, audiences will see the Ben Schwartz-voiced speedster going up against Jim Carrey’s Doctor Eggman in an offering that also stars James Marsden, Adam Pally, Tika Sumpter and Neal McDonough.

Taika Waititi to Direct Live-Action AKIRA for 2021

Akira

The last we’d heard about Warner Brothers’ long-standing live-action Akira movie was back in late 2017 when Taika Waititi revealed he had been in early talks to direct the picture. And now, we have a major update on the film.

Straight from Warners, Waititi is indeed the person tasked with helming the feature. But not only that, but The WB has set a May 21st, 2021 release date for Akira.

Waititi, of course, is a huge genre favourite for offerings such as Eagle vs. Shark, Boy, What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Thor: Ragnarok. Up next for the ridiculously talented New Zealander is Jojo Rabbit.

Bar a change in location from Neo-Tokyo to New Manhattan, the early official word on this new Akira sounds largely the same as Katsuhiro Otomo’s original manga and his seminal 1988 movie adaptation:

Set in a future city environment called New Manhattan, the sci-fi epic follows the leader of a biker gang who must save his best friend, who has been experimented on by the government causing him to develop dangerous and destructive psychokinetic powers.

In terms of any other information we know about this new Akira, Waititi has previously said how he’d like to go with a largely unknown bunch of Asian teenagers in the key roles.

As ever, expect more on Akira as it continues to develop.

ABC May Renew WHISKEY CAVALIER for a Second Season

Whiskey Cavalier

Last month brought news that ABC had cancelled the Lauren Cohan-starring Whiskey Cavalier after just one solitary season. But now, it appears that the series may not be as dead as once thought.

Courtesy of The Wrap, ABC and Warner Bros. are now believed to be back in talks to reverse that initial decision to scrap the show.

To be fair, Warner Bros. were still looking to continue with the series even after ABC axed Whiskey Cavalier. As such, they planned to shop the show around to other networks in the hope of it being picked up for a second year. Now, ABC is reconsidering matters and a set decision is expected to be made public within the next fortnight.

If you remember, Lauren Cohan quit The Walking Dead in order to focus on Whiskey Cavalier, meaning that initial cancellation lad to TWD fans hoping that this axing would open the door for Cohan’s Maggie Rhee to return to the walker-tastic show down the line.

For those who haven’t had a chance to check out Whiskey Cavalier, the action-comedy show centres on an agency of spies tasked with saving the world.

As ever, expect more on the future of Whiskey Cavalier as it continues to develop.

Don’t Expect Any Direct GAME OF THRONES Follow-up Series

Game of Thrones

Well, Game of Thrones has now finally come to a close, with the internet absolutely hating/adoring (delete as applicable) the show’s concluding episode. Now, we have some confirmation on what we won’t see from the new Thrones shows in development.

First and foremost, there are indeed certain spoilers for Game of Thrones’ final episode in this story, so, y’know, you’ve been warned. With that in mind then…

*SPOILERS*

Given how Thrones concluded, many fans have been hopeful that we’d get to see the further adventures of certain characters – mainly Arya Stark and Jon Snow – but HBO’s Casey Bloys has ruled out any such follow-on series.

Speaking to Deadline, Bloys explained, “I understand where that comes from, I totally get it, but in terms of wanting to be careful not overdoing it or not killing the goose that lays the golden egg, Dan [Weiss] and David [Benoiff]’s show as it stands is eight seasons. I want to leave it as its own work of art and not have shows directly [following that], [such as] having Arya do that. I think it’s best to try the prequels in other areas of George’s massive universe. [That] just feels like the right thing to do, let the show stand on its own.”

Previously, there were four Game of Thrones spinoff/prequel shows in various stages of development. Bloys has clarified, however, that there is now only one show that HBO is moving forward with currently. That is the Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin to-be-titled offering that will be set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Production on the pilot episode of that series is due to start next month, with Naomi Watts, John Simm and Miranda Richardson just three of the names already signed on for that show. After that, there is still the possibility of other Thrones series being explored.

So the long and short of it is, don’t be expecting to see how Arya’s trip to find out what lies west of Westeros plays out, don’t be expecting to see how Sansa as Queen of the North plays out, don’t be expecting to see how Bran as the King of the Six Kingdoms plays out, and don’t be expecting to see how Jon Snow and his Wildlings pals get on.

Whether you were satisfied with how Game of Thrones’ final season or not, there’s no disputing that this has been a show for the ages that offered up some of the greatest television that we’ve ever seen.
