Goldstein and Daley in Talks for DUNGEONS & DRAGONS

Dungeons & Dragons

For years, Paramount Pictures has been trying to get a new Dungeons & Dragons offering to the silver screen. And now, the studio could be close to find somebody to fill their director’s chair.

Courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount is said to be in talks with Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley about directing the picture.

Goldstein and Daley made their directing debut in 2015 with the Vacation franchise reboot, and more recently helmed Game Night. Elsewhere, the duo’s writing work include Horrible Bosses, Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.

The last we’d heard on Dungeons & Dragons was back in early 2018, with The LEGO Batman Movie’s Chris McKay at the point lined up to direct the movie. Instead, McKay has departed the project to turn his attention to the Chris Pratt-headlined Ghost Draft.

The D&D property itself began life back in 1974 as a hugely popular roleplaying game. Full of magical and mystical characters, the game was famously turned in to a cartoon series back in 1983, and a live-action turd-tastic movie would finally happen in 2000. Several other straight-to-DVD films have followed, and this latest new take on Dungeons & Dragons has been in development as far back as 2013. 2016 then saw Ansel Elgort in talks to star in the picture, but nothing concrete seemed to come of those negotiations.

As ever, expect more on all of this as we get it.

Robert De Niro to Join Scorsese’s KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON

Robert De Niro

As Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio re-teaming for a movie adaptation of David Grann’s Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, now comes news that another regular Scorsese collaborator is to be a part of the picture.

Courtesy of Tulsa World, it’s being reported that Robert De Niro will be joining Scorsese and DiCaprio on the film.

The official word on the source novel reads:

In 1920s Oklahoma, the Osage Nation were the richest people per capita in the world, after oil was discovered under their land. And then they were murdered, one by one. As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case and unravelled a chilling conspiracy and one of the most monstrous crimes in American history.

Seemingly the movie will simply be titled Killers of the Flower Moon, with shooting to take place in Osage County later this year.

This will be the ninth feature film that Scorsese and De Niro have worked on together – going back to 1973’s Mean Streets – while Scorsese and DiCaprio’s working relationship is currently at five movies, dating back to 2002’s Gangs of New York. Of course, all three of Scorsese, De Niro and DiCaprio also worked together on 2015’s The Audition short film.

Expect more on Killers of the Flower Moon as it continues to develop.

Luca Guadagnino in Talks to Direct LORD OF THE FLIES

Lord of the Flies

With Warner Brothers having picked up the rights for William Golding’s Lord of the Flies a couple of years ago, now comes word on The WB lining up a director to helm a new big-screen take on the property.

Courtesy of Variety, Warners Bros. is in talks with Luca Guadagnino about directing a new movie version of Lord of the Flies. Guadagnino won himself a whole host of supporters for his mind-blowing take on Suspiria last year, and he and his producing partner Marco Morabito are both in talks with Warners.

Released in 1954, William Golding’s Lord of the Flies centres on a group of British boys who are stranded on an uninhabited island. As they attempt to govern themselves, things take a turn for the savage.

To date, there have been three movie adaptations of Lord of the Flies – in 1963, 1975, and 1990 – and the property has also been adapted for the stage and for radio.

Expect more on this new Lord of the Flies as we get it.

Jean Smart’s WATCHMEN Role is Silk Spectre

Jean Smart Silk Spectre Watchmen

With Doctor Manhattan and Ozymandias already revealed to be a part of HBO’s upcoming Watchmen series, now comes word that another familiar character will be appearing in the show.

Via IGN, showrunner Damon Lindelof has confirmed that the role being played by Fargo and Legion’s Jean Smart is that of Laurie Juspeczyk, aka Silk Spectre. In Watchmen, Laurie will be going by the name of Laurie Blake after taking on the surname of her real father, Edward Blake, aka The Comedian. This older Laurie will be working for the FBI in the series.

HBO’s Watchmen will be a completely original story set in the world established in the iconic Watchmen tale of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

Watchmen will premiere at a to-be-confirmed date later this year.

TITANS Adds Genevieve Angelson

Genevieve Angelson

With Titans having already amassed quite the impressive new additions ahead of its impending second season, now comes word that Genevieve Angelson has joined the series.

Courtesy of Deadline, the Good Girls Revolt and Flack actress is to play Dr. Eve Watson in the show. That character is described as “a research doctor with conflicted feelings about her recent work at Cadmus Laboratories, the genetic engineering hub known in DC Comics mythology as the birthplace of the clone called Superboy”.

Given that description of Doc Watson, it could well be that she has a role to play in the creation of Joshua Orpin’s Superboy.

In addition to Angelson and Orpin, Titans has also added Esai Morales as Deathstroke, Chelsea Zhang as Ravager, Chella Man as Jericho, Natalie Gumede as Mercy Graves, Drew Van Acker as Aqualad, and Iain Glen as Bruce Wayne.

Season 2 of Titans will premiere at a to-be-confirmed date towards the end of the year or early in 2020.

GAME OF THRONES Rules the Emmys Nominations

The Emmy nominations this year brought both the very familiar – “Game of Thrones” and some fresh faces – Billy Porter (“Pose”), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”) and Jharrel Jerome (“When They See Us”).

In its last season on HBO, and despite the outcries of very vocal fans unsatisfied with the outcome, the epic series received 32 nominations from the Television Academy – the most of any other series. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” on Amazon Prime got the second most with 20.

And since we’re keeping score, HBO garnered 137 nominations, Netflix, 118 nominations and NBC had 58, the most of any “traditional” network.

SBR’s top-rated sportsbooks like Bovada already are offering odds on who will win, with some longshots having a chance. So, before placing a bet make sure to read a Bovada review first.

Some of the fresh faces may take home a few awards, but the track record usually favors the familiar ones.

For example, in the Best Drama Series category, the nominees are: “Better Call Saul,” “Bodyguard,” “Game of Thrones,” “Killing Eve,” “Ozark,” “Pose,” “Succession,” and “This Is Us.” We are thrilled to see “Killing Eve,” “Pose,” and “Succession” in the running but even with all the backlash, the voters will give this award to “GOT” just as a last bend the knee to the eight-year saga.

In the Lead Actor In A Drama Series, the nominees are Jason Bateman, “Ozark”; Sterling K. Brown, “This Is Us’; Kit Harington, “Game of Thrones”; Bob Odenkirk, “Better Call Saul”; Billy Porter, “Pose”; and Milo Ventimiglia, “This Is Us.” As much as we’d love to see Ventimiglia win this award, it is like where a “newbie” will break through. Consider putting your money on Harington but most likely Porter who is hot, hotter, HOTTEST right now.

As for Lead Actress In A Drama, the nominees are Emilia Clarke, “Game of Thrones”; Jodie Comer, “Killing Eve”; Viola Davis, “How to Get Away with Murder”; Laura Linney, “Ozark”; Mandy Moore, “This Is Us”; Sandra Oh, “Killing Eve’; Robin Wright, “House of Cards.” With last year’s winner, Oh, squaring off against her in-show rival Comer and possibly splitting the vote, the door is open Daenerys (Clarke) or Linney to take the trophy.

The Best Comedy Series is a tough one to pick with the nominees “Barry,” “Fleabag,” “The Good Place,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, “Russian Doll,” “Schitt’s Creek,” and “Veep.” “Mrs. Maisel” won last year and received the most noms of any comedy, but that doesn’t mean it will take home the win. Many are thrilled to see “Schitt’s Creek finally on the list but we’re shooting for Bill Hader’s “Barry.”

As for Lead Actor in a Comedy those going for laughs and the statuette Anthony Anderson, “Black-ish”; Don Cheadle, “Black Monday”; Ted Danson, “The Good Place”; Michael Douglas, “The Kominsky Method”; Bill Hader, “Barry”; Eugene Levy, “Schitt’s Creek.” We’re all about Hader as trained klller turned wannabe actor, but there might be some softies who will pick Douglas as the has-been actor turned acting teacher.

Vying for the Lead Actress in a Comedy award, the nominees are Christina Applegate, “Dead to Me”; Rachel Brosnahan, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”; Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep”; Natasha Lyonne, “Russian Doll”; Catherine O’Hara, “Schitt’s Creek”; Phoebe Waller-Bridge, “Fleabag.” Normally we would say this was a shoo-in – All Julia Louis-Dreyfus, all the time. She has won six times for playing this character alone, it’s her last season, and well, she’s fierce. Shoo-in, right? The competition is stiff, last year’s winner Brosnahan plus the first-timers Lyonne, O’Hara, and Waller-Bridge. Applegate was nominated in 2009. Any of them could win, but is it wrong to wish is were O’Hara who has been entertaining us for years and years?

As for handicapping the other races, competition is equally as tight in the Best Limited Series category between “Chernobyl” on HBO and “When They See Us” on Netflix. We think “When They See Us,” about the injustice served the Central Park 5 has the edge, as does Jharrel Jerome in the Lead Actor Limited Series, who who skillfully played Korey Wise as both a teen and as an adult. It would be a crime if Michelle Williams doesn’t win for her turn as Gwen Verdon in “Fosse/Verdon,” but never underestimate Niecy Nash.
