THE BABYSITTER Back for More!

babysitter

Unlikely sequel alert! Unlikely sequel alert! While the movie itself was wildly entertaining, the pitch-black comedy horror The Babysitter has hardly made much of an impact since it premiered on Netflix in October of 2017. Never heard of it? You’re not the only one.

Despite this, it’s been revealed today that the streaming platform has greenlit The Babysitter 2, and production is far enough along to have made it to the casting stage. Original director McG (Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle) is confirmed to return, but at the time of writing he’s the only one, with American Vandal‘s Dan Lagana taking over from Brian Duffield on script duties. Naturally, this also means we’re in the dark as to whether the film’s story will continue on from the original and see the wonderful Samara Weaving (Home and Away) reprising her role as the eponymous babysitter with a big bad secret, or her young charge, Cole, played by Judah Lewis (Summer of 84). Could this be going the anthology route instead? Possible, but we wouldn’t imagine that would be enough to entice McG back behind the megaphone…

It would do newcomers to the film a great disservice to go into detail regarding the plot of The Babysitter, but we do encourage you to seek it out if you’re one of the many fans of the increasingly in-demand Weaving (soon to be seen in the equally bloody looking Ready or Not), or you’re that one remaining fan of McG.

THE BABYSITTER can currently be seen on Netflix. Treat yourself! (But bed by 9!)

Joe Holt Joins New WALKING DEAD Spin-Off Series

Joe Holt

As AMC’s new Walking Dead spin-off series continues to amass its core cast, Joe Holt has joined the show.

Via Deadline, Holt – best known to genre fans for his role in Marvel’s The Punisher – will be playing a character called Leo Bennett. That character is pegged as a family man and professor who is brimming with optimism and hope.

Holt joins a cast that currently features Alexa Mansour, Nicolas Cantu, Hal Cumpston, Aliyah Royale, Annet Mahendru and Nico Tortorella.

The early word on this second spin-off series from the main The Walking Dead reads:

The series is said to feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it.

To consist of a ten-episode debut season, this to-be-titled show will premiere towards the middle of next year.

Alexandre Aja to Direct Interactive, Branched Narrative Horror

Alexandre Aja

With Crawl having impressed many, we now have word on what’s next for Alexandre Aja.

Courtesy of Collider, Aja is planning a unique-sounding horror offering for Amblin Partners. The early word on the film has it pegged as a haunted house film that’s a “choose-your-own-adventure-style horror movie” offering.

The idea for the to-be-titled film came from The Haunting of Hill House’s Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard, and Howard will pen the movie’s screenplay alongside Aja.

From what we’re hearing, the film will be an interactive effort with audiences forging their own branched narrative that directly influences the story. Seemingly, fans will be able to vote on plot points and character decisions as the movie is ongoing – with phone apps being utilised for said voting.

This all sounds hugely intriguing, if you ask us.

As ever, expect more on this next Alexandre Aja picture as it continues to develop.

Henry Golding in Talks to Headline SNAKE EYES

Snake Eyes Henry Golding

With Paramount Pictures having spent the last little while developing a G.I. Joe spin-off picture for Snake Eyes, it looks as if that movie may well have found its sword-wielding badass.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Henry Golding is in talks to play the lead role in Snake Eyes. Golding is likely best known for his turns in the likes of Crazy Rich Asians, The Gentlemen and Last Christmas.

In the history of the G.I. Joe property, Snake Eyes has always been seen as one of the coolest characters out there – be that in toys, comic books, animated shows, or even in the live-action G.I. Joe films. Where those films are concerned, genre fave Ray Park has played this mysterious martial arts master. One school of thought is that Snake Eyes will be a reboot of sorts not attached to the G.I. Joe movies that we’ve already seen – either way, Park will not be back in the role.

R.I.P.D.’s Robert Schwentke is on directing duties for Snake Eyes, with The Huntsman: Winter’s War’s Evan Spiliotopoulous working on the screenplay.

At this stage, Snake Eyes is set for a March 27th, 2020 release.

New CANDYMAN Movie Adds Two More Names

Colman Domingo

With the Jordan Peele-produced new Candyman continuing to amass its core cast, the picture now has two new additions.

Via Deadline, Fear the Walking Dead’s Colman Domingo (pictured) and Misfits’ Nathan Stewart-Jarrett have signed on to join the picture – currently just titled Candyman. There’s no word right now on the roles that this pair will be playing.

Domingo and Stewart-Jarrett join a film the currently features Get Out’s Lakeith Stanfield as an art dealer obsessed with the legend of the Candyman, while If Beale Street Could Talk’s Teyonah Paris will play his girlfriend. Aquaman’s Yahya Abdu-Mateen II also has a role in the movie, which could well be that of the famed Candyman.

Candyman is currently being billed as a spiritual sequel to the original Candyman film rather than a remake or reboot.

Candyman itself actually began life as a short story in Clive Barker’s Books of Blood. Originally titled The Forbidden, the story was famously adapted as a 1992 Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen-starring movie from Bernard Rose. Plot-wise, the movie version took place in the semi-demolished Cabrini-Green housing development in Chicago. Todd’s Candyman was an artist and the son of a slave, murdered by bees by his lover’s father after first having his hand lopped off.

From there, the urban legend of the Candyman is that if you say his name five times while looking in the mirror, he’ll appear behind you – and likely slice you up good ‘n’ proper. Sequels followed with 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and 1999’s Candyman: Day of the Dead, and despite mild rumblings over the decades, the franchise has remained dead since that ’99 effort.

For this new Candyman, the film will return to the area that once housed the Cabrini-Green housing projects. This time out, we find a new group of poor souls wishing to explore the legend of the infamous Candyman. Which we all know, will likely not end well for the majority of those involved.

To be directed by Little Woods’ Nia DaCosta from a screenplay penned by Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld, Candyman is booked in for a June 12th, 2020 release.

Filming on the movie began earlier this week in Chicago.

Djimon Hounsou to Replace Brian Tyree Henry in A QUIET PLACE 2

Djimon Hounsou

With A Quiet Place 2 on the way next year, the sequel has had a change-up amongst its cast.

Courtesy of Deadline, Brian Tyree Henry has had to depart the project due to scheduling conflicts – and he’ll be replaced by Djimon Hounsou.

Hounsou is likely best known to genre fans for the likes of Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy, Gladiator and Blood Diamond. Most recently he appeared in Shazam! as the wizard Shazam, which in itself was a role that was originally to be played by Ron Cephas Jones.

For A Quiet Place 2, Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe are all returning, and they’ll be joined by Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy in the follow-up.

With John Krasinski back in the director’s chair, A Quiet Place 2 is currently set for a March 20th, 2020 release.

Katana to Return for ARROW’s Final Season

Rila Fukushima Katana

As Arrow gears up for its eighth and final season, now comes word that Rila Fukushima will be returning for the Emerald Archer’s swansong.

Courtesy of Green Arrow TV, Fukushima will be back as Tatsu Yamashiro, aka Katana.

The Tatsau character was a key part of the show’s third season and even had a fleeting appearance in Season 4, but the badass warrior has not been seen since.

In the show’s final season, the second episode is titled Welcome to Hong Kong and will see Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen reunited with Tatsu.

One other character whose status for Season 8 is a little more uncertain is Colton Haynes’ Roy Harper. Haynes has recently taken to Twitter to say that he’s not been asked back as a series regular, although showrunner Beth Schwartz has talked up how she’d love to have Haynes back in some form or fashion.

Arrow’s final season begins on October 15th and will be made be made up of a shorter ten-episode run.

Disney Weighing Live-Action ALADDIN Sequel

Aladdin

Ready for a live-action Aladdin sequel? Yeah, we’re not too sure either…

Courtesy of Collider, Disney is unsurprisingly looking at developing a sequel to Guy Ritchie’s recent take on Aladdin. The reason why that’s so unsurprising? Well, that’s because the film has brought in over $1 billion at the global box office.

There’s nothing official on this just yet, and it appears that the House of Mouse is merely exploring its options about an Aladdin 2 – and with that sort of box office haul, that’s always to be expected.

Of course, the 1992 animated Aladdin movie did indeed actually have two sequels – The Return of Jafar in 1994 and Aladdin and the King of Thieves in 1996.

Expect more on a live-action Aladdin sequel if and when it develops any further.
