Warhammer comes to World of Warships

Warhammer Warship

It’s safe to say that the Warhammer 40,000 brand can be found on a lot of video games, but we never expected to see something like this. Historical Naval combat video game World of Warships has teamed up with Games Workshop to bring the Grim Darkness of the 41st Millennium to the savage seas.

The update will feature new content such as themed ship skins, commanders, camouflages and more; all based on the popular Warhammer 40,000 universe. Though these appear to skins, the Chaos one looks like it’s about the sprout wings anytime soon. Just look at that thing.

The pack will only cover the two main factions; the Imperium of Man and Chaos. Both ship’s look appropriately ridiculous and awesome in equal measure, and appear to be armed with enough firepower to make any Priest of Mars worth the name have a little cry. World of Warships is no stranger to this sort of cross-over, with a long running tradition of unusual ship design. We assume an Ork ship was probably considered and then sank immediately for having too much dakka.

Complete Fiction Production Banner Launched

Edgar Wright Joe Cornish

While Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho horror movie has recently been pulled from its September release date, now comes word on a new project for the Shaun of the Dead helmer.

Courtesy of Variety, Wright is teaming up with Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish for several new Netflix series.

Wright and Cornish are coming together with Baby Driver producers Nira Park and Rachael Prior to form a new production company called Complete Fiction.

First up for Complete Fiction will be an adaptation of Jonathan Stroud’s supernatural detective tales Lockwood & Co. John Cornish will serve as executive producer on that series.

This new production banner has also picked up the adaptation rights for Tade Thompson’s sci-fi horror trilogy The Murders of Molly Southbourne and S.A. Chakraborty’s historical fantasy series The City of Brass. Both of these projects will again be housed at Netflix.

Complete Fiction also has several other to-be-revealed projects in development.

Jamie Lee Curtis to Direct MOTHER NATURE

Jamie Lee Curtis

Fresh off being announced to be directing How We Sleep at Night: The Sara Cunningham Story for Lifetime, now comes news of another directing project for Jamie Lee Curtis.

Via Deadline, Curtis and her Comet Pictures banner have signed a three-year first-look film and TV deal with Blumhouse. As part of this agreement, Curtis will direct a genre project titled Mother Nature.

Plot specifics have yet to be fully revealed for Mother Nature at this early stage, although the movie will centre on climate change. Curtis is co-writing the script with Comet’s Russell Goldman.

Expect more on Mother Nature as we get it.

Ruby Rose Quits as BATWOMAN

Batwoman Ruby Rose

In some surprising news, The CW’s Batwoman is now on the hunt for a new Kate Kane.

Courtesy of Variety, Batwoman star Ruby Rose has departed the series just a matter of days after its debut season came to a close in the US.

On her decision to step away from the cape and cowl, Rose said, “I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season. This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show. I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created.”

Rose first turned up as Batwoman in 2018’s Elseworlds crossover event, before then having her own Batwoman show debut last October. That show would go on to be the second most-viewed of The CW’s shared Arrowverse series during its debut season.

The current plan is still for Batwoman’s second season to premiere in January 2021, with tentative plans to do a crossover tale with the impending Superman and Lois show that’s in the works.

From The CW’s standpoint, they’ve released a statement to reiterate that they are committed to Batwoman’s long-term future and that they “look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”

So the good news is that Batwoman will be back for a second season, but the bad news is that the series now has a Ruby Rose-shaped hole to fill.

Olivia Holt to Headline Freeform’s LAST SUMMER

Cloak & Dagger

Earlier this year saw Freeform put in a series order for the Jessica Biel-produced Last Summer, and now comes an update on that project.

Via Deadline, Cloak & Dagger’s Olivia Holt has been brought in to headline the offering as Kate, “the embodiment of teenage perfection whose life is one to be envied until she mysteriously disappears.”

In a slight tweak, the title of the show has been changed-up from Last Summer to Cruel Summer.

From what we’ve heard about Cruel Summer, the series will span across the three summers of 1993, 1994, and 1995. Set in a small Texas town, the focus is on the two lead characters of Kate and Jeanette. When the pretty and popular Kate is abducted in ’93, the awkward and sincere Jeanette becomes the town’s new favourite – before later becoming the most hated girl in the United States.

Each episode of Cruel Summer will be told from the perspective of one of the show’s two lead characters.

Timothy Olyphant Joins THE MANDALORIAN

Timothy Olyphant

As The Mandalorian continues to amass quite the impressive ensemble for its second season, now comes word of another genre favourite joining the action.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Timothy Olyphant is the latest name to join the Disney+ offering. At this stage, there’s zero word on just who Olyphant will be playing in the series, although he recent new additions in the form of Temeura Morrison’s Boba Fett, Rosario Dawson’s Ashoka Tano, Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kryze, and an unknown role for Michael Biehn.

Olyphant is best known to genre fans for the likes of Santa Clarita Diet, Justified, The Crazies, Hitman, Scream 2, Deadwood, Fargo, Go, Dreamcatcher, and most recently was seen in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.

The current plan for The Mandalorian’s second season, is for it to hit Disney+ this coming October.

David Arquette Returning for SCREAM 5

Scream 4

With a new Scream movie confirmed earlier this year, now comes a huge update on the return of this most beloved of modern-day horror franchise.

As announced by Spyglass Media’s Peter Oillataguerre, David Arquette is on board for what is now officially being labelled Scream 5.

Previously, it was uncertain whether or not this new Scream would be a continuation of the four previous movies, whether it would be a reboot, whether it would be an all-out remake, or whether it would veer in some other path altogether. With the news that franchise mainstay Arquette is reprising his role as Dewey Riley, that confirms that Scream 5 will indeed exist within the same world as the four films that have come before it.

Arquette is one of only three people to have appeared in all four Scream movies, and it now remains to be seen whether he’ll be joined in Scream 5 by fellow mainstays Neve Campbell and Courtenay Cox.

Already, we’ve heard rumblings that Campbell has been in tentative talks to return as series protagonist Sidney Prescott, although all has remained quite on Cox returning as Gail Weathers.

At this early stage, plot specifics are being kept hush-hush on what we can expect from Scream 5. Encouragingly, Ready or Not duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will be directing, with Ready or Not’s Guy Busick and Murder Mystery Zodiac’s James Vanderbilt on writing duties and Scream fave Kevin Williamson serving as executive producer.

The current plan is for Scream 5 to start principal photography in Wilmington, North Carolina later this year – once a safe working environment can be guaranteed, of course.

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY Returning to Netflix in July

The Umbrella Academy

In some great news for fans of Netflix’s hugely impressive The Umbrella Academy, we now have confirmation on when you can expect to see the show’s second season.

As per the on-demand streaming service, said second year of The Umbrella Academy will hit Netflix on July 31st. And that news has been accompanied by a swanky video to celebrate this reveal.

The official blurb on this announcement reads:

On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. Now, the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and must work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

LAST NIGHT IN SOHO and THE FOREVER PURGE Releases Pulled

Last Night in Soho

Taking their lead from plentiful other movies, two more pictures have had their big-screen release pulled due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic.

The latest films to be put on hold as the entertainment industry continues to be engulfed by uncertainty are Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho and James DeMonaco’s The Forever Purge.

Last Night in Soho had initially been set for a September 25 release by Focus Features, but that movie has now been completely pulled from Focus’ release schedule. Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie star in the ‘60s-set claustrophobic horror.

As for The Forever Purge, Universal has likewise pulled the fifth Purge feature from its July 10 release and has yet to announce a new release for the picture. This comes hot on the heels of last week’s news that USA Network has cancelled The Purge TV series after two seasons.
