Sony is in development on the science fiction film Omega, with 2021’s Mortal Kombat filmmaker Simon McQuoid attached to direct, Deadline reports.

Set in rural Texas, Omega will follow a downtrodden young woman who gets more than she bargained for when she meets a mysterious stranger: a reality-warping power that throws her into a dark underworld with ancient origins. As she finds herself hunted by a cabal of professional hitmen, she must master her newly-acquired ability and discover who she really is.

Mandalay Pictures’ Jason Michael Berman and Jordan Moldo are attached to executive produce Omega, while Columbia Pictures and Sony representatives, Peter Kang and Alex Rosario, will oversee the project.

Blair Butler is aboard to rewrite the script, from an original spec by David M. Crabtree. She is best known for writing the supernatural horror Polaroid and the slasher film Hell Fest; Butler also produced the Hulu series Hellstrom and wrote The Bride, which will be released this summer.

No word yet on who might be cast in the sci-fi thriller, but the production is still in its very early days. As for the Mortal Kombat sequel, a director has not yet been announced, but it is not thought that McQuoid will return.
