Whilst Deadpool is still tearing through box offices across the globe, don’t be expecting Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth to be popping up in an X-Men movie just yet.

Given how the X-Men’s Colossus and rookie Negasonic Teenage Warhead played a key role in Deadpool, and with Cable confirmed for the already-in-development Deadpool 2, not to mention Deadpool’s glut of X-Men references, many were wondering whether Wade Wilson would be making an appearance in a full-on X-movie at some point in the near future. That possibility has been played down, though, by Deadpool writers/executive producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Speaking to The Playlist, Reese said, “If you look at the Iron Man model, they had two Iron Man movies before they had an Avengers, and if left up to us, I think that would be a very prudent path. The second issue at hand is the X-Men universe timeline. The X-Men series is currently set in the 1980s, Deadpool is set three decades later in our present day.”

Wernick added, “It’s a timeline that will eventually catch up, I would imagine. But Simon’s more the keeper of that universe and maybe we’ll see more X-Men playing in Deadpool’s sandbox and probably Deadpool playing in their sandbox at some point.”

Pointing out how 20th Century Fox now have two successful franchises on their hands, Wernick continued, “Deadpool’s now become a brand and franchise unto himself, independent of the X-Men, and that’s great. And that gives the studio two franchises in one, but I think it is its own franchise, and you’ll see synergy between those two properties, but they’re two very distinct brands.”

Just this past weekend, Deadpool passed $600 million at the global box office, which is even more impressive given how the film cost just $58 million to make.
