Hands up who’s eagerly awaiting the Brad Pitt-starring zombie epic WORLD WAR Z? Yep, us too. Or at least we were until we saw this piece of footage that’s been doing the rounds. It’s straight from the set, so expect it to be a little on the raw side, but it does give us our first look at a “zombie” in action, and answers the question whether we’ll be getting traditional Romero style living dead (as depicted in Max Brook’s original novel), or the Russo-esque running type modern audiences have become accustomed to. I’m guessing you might know where I’m going with this already…

Credit where credit’s due, the fella playing the victim sure is committed to his role (they required a ton of CGI to make Colin Farrell contort in a similar manner in FRIGHT NIGHT 3D!), but it’s deeply saddening that the studio didn’t have the conviction to give us a ‘proper’ zombie flick, doubly so because they’re not honouring the original source material at all. Colour us disappointed.

But it’s not to say we’re writing the flick off. After all, while any sane genre fan prefers the Romero approach, there have been some fantastic movies featuring the sprinting kind – 28 DAYS LATER, Snyder’s DAWN OF THE DEAD and my personal favourite (and the first to feature this type of zombie) 1985’s excellent THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD are just a few examples.

We’ll get over it in time. And seeing as how the movie’s not hitting until December 2012 we’ve got plenty of it.

WORLD WAR Z stars Brad Pitt, BREAKING BAD’s Bryan Cranston, LOST’s Matthew Fox, and THE KILLING’s Mireille Enos.
