After the box office disaster that was SPEED RACER, Andy and Lana (formerly Larry) Waschowski have been a bit quiet. There were rumours of a homo erotic gulf war satire by the name of COBALT NEURAL 9 or something, and they also are co-directors on the ambitious adaptation CLOUD ATLAS due out next year. Now something called JUPITER ASCENDING is on their roster.

The project has started showing up on internal info sheets at Warner Bros where it is in development. It is said to be an original screenplay by the pair and their first major play for a science fiction franchise since THE MATRIX. Production will apparently ramp up in the spring and casting is underway.

I seem to be one of the few who actually liked THE MATRIX sequels when they came out although I concede that they have flaws. SPEED RACER is also a fun kids movie that went over everyone’s head. There was a time when we were all blown away by THE MATRIX which was a Waschowski original script and there is no reason to think that JUPITER ASCENDING won’t have a similar impact. Now if we could just find out what it’s about….
