Wow, the studios are really spoiling us this week with the release of yet another sweet new poster for us to ogle. It’s only Tuesday and already we’ve had THE MUPP

ETS
, SHERLOCK HOLMES 2, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and now this, the much anticipated return of THE THING. Why would we be excited about a remake of John Carpenter’s 1982 horror classic? We’ll have a chat after we’ve had a ganders at the one-sheet…
Perfect. It’s minimilistic, it evokes the 1982 artwork, cool tagline, and it’s subtly horrific – the Thingy-fied left hand took a few moments to even notice.

Now, what with our unified dislike of remakes and reboots here at Starburst HQ (you can see evidence of this in the recent EVIL DEAD news), why would we be enthusiastic about this one? Well firstly, let’s remind ourselves that Carpenter’s flick was also a remake of THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD from 1951. Secondly, producers Srike Entertainment (the DAWN OF THE DEAD chaps) have taken quite a unique approach in that this movie acts as a companion piece to the ’82 version, telling the tale of the Norwegian research team’s encounter with the alien before we were introduced to Kurt and co (if you recall it’s their infected dog that infiltrates our hero’s camp and triggers the mayhem). It’s a refreshing take on the remake trend, and pretty nifty to boot.

The movie stars DEATH PROOF and SCOTT PILGRIM star Mary Elizabeth Winstead; Eric Christian Olsen (best known as that ‘tiny nipples’ dude from COMMUNITY); Joel Edgerton (Owen Lars in the STAR WARS prequels); and LOST’s Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (no, I can’t pronounce it either). Matthijs van Heijningen Jr makes his filmmaking debut, directing from a screenplay by BATTLESTAR GALACTICA showrunner Ronald D. Moore.

We’ll get to see whether or not they can pull it off this coming Halloween.

Opinions? We know you got ’em! Share them with your Starburst brethren below!
