With studios clambering to snap up every existing vampire property on the market, it comes as little surprise that THE NIGHT STALKER is now heading to the big screen.

For those unfamiliar, THE NIGHT STALKER was a 1972 made for TV movie featuring a reporter by the name of Carl Kolchak (Darren McGavin) who, while investigating a case of serial murders, comes to the conclusion that

the perpetrator is in fact a vampire. This theory doesn’t jibe well with the authorities, and subsequent adventures (in the short-lived TV series KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER) saw him go it alone as a renegade paranormal investigator, hunting down all manner of other supernatural phenomenon.

It’s a strong premise, and although we’ve seen it recycled many times over since it went off the air in ’75 (THE X-FILES, ANGEL, BAYWATCH NIGHTS: SEASON 2) it’s not hard to see why Disney would acquire it. Especially with Johnny Depp stepping aboard to co-produce and star.

Will the combined might of Mickey Mouse and Captain Jack be able to convince audiences that they can deliver something fresh, or will it go the way of the last attempt to resurrect this franchise – the 2005 tv reboot starring Stuart Townsend lasted a mere 10 episodes before its cancellation. We shall see…
