UPDATED:

Anybody who listened to the June 26th episode of STARBURST RADIO will have heard exactly how upset some people are about this news, but it seems a few fans have gone one step further than merely crying about it on YouTube… they’re planning to sue the makers of game.

To be fair on the 50+ players involved in the lawsuit, it’s not quite as knee-jerk as it all sounds. Their petition to keep the game going seemed to annoy makers SOE, who promptly executed an ‘Order 66’ on all Forums that advertised it. Why they didn’t just let them get on with it is anyone’s guess, it’s not like it was ever going to work in the first place. SOE’s license with LucasArts ends at the end of this year, so they really couldn’t keep the Galaxies alive if they wanted to.

Game over, guys.

Man, first Colan, then Falk, now STAR WARS GALAXIES is biting the big one too.

SOE, makers of the MMO, contacted all remaining subscribers today to break the sad news.

“The shutdown of SWG is a very difficult decision, but SOE and LucasArts have mutually agreed that the end of 2011 is the appropriate time to end the game.”

Players have until December 15th to say their goodbyes.

Understandably apprehensive about upsetting the legions of fans dedicated to their product, SOA have announced several bonuses in way of apology. Starting on December 8th will be a week long “Galaxy-ending event”, which while rather light on details does at least suggest the game will have some sort of closure. Beats just pulling the plug out of the server I guess. Other incentives include a “fully-paid subscriber status” on a selection of other SOA titles including DC UNIVERSE ONLINE, EVERQUEST, FREE REALMS, or if players aren’t to pissed off at LucasArts they can join STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS ADVENTURES.

Or just buy STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC when it’s released later this year.
