Oh no… it’s happening all over again! First they destroyed THE FLINSTONES for us, then SCOOBY DOO, now Alcon Entertainment have announced that they’re about to taint yet another of our beloved childhood properties with a big-screen, live-action adaptation. The victim this time? Hanna Barbera’s HONG KONG PHOOEY.

The flick, which will feature our favourite janitor turned crime-fighting superhero (also, he’s a dog) rendered through (no doubt crummy) CGI-wizardy, is set to be directed by the auteur who brought us such classics as CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD (starring Carrot Top), BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA 2 (yes, they actually made a sequel), INSPECTOR GADGET 2, and the eagerly awaited TOOTH FAIRY 2 – Alex Zamm. Eddie Murphy continues to tighten the noose around his career by taking over vocal duties from Scatman Crothers (R.I.P.) by providing the voice of Phooey himself.

Yep. Sounds like a winner!

That said, we’re currently living in an age were ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS is now a fully fledged cash-gobbling behemoth of a franchise (ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS : CHIP-WRECKED hits this December), and THE SMURFS is capable of destroying COWBOYS & ALIENS at the box office (earning it an early greenlight, it’ll be here August 2nd 2013, folks!), so HONG KONG PHOOEY has every chance of hitting big.

Hollywood, just do us a favour and leave COUNT DUCKULA alone, will you?

Looking forward to this? Are you a closet Zamm fan? What is Murphy playing at?! He was Axel flippin’ Foley for flips sake! Are there any properties you’d actually enjoy getting this treatment? Let us know with your comments below!
