As reported in our WEEKEND ROUNDUP, Dimension Films continue to tease the possibility of more SCREAM movies – despite the “underwhelming” box office takings and so-so critical reaction* to part 4.

Speaking with MTV at the Cannes Film Festival, Dimension bigwig Harvey Weinstein revealed just how “underwhelming” those takings were:

“I wish it would have been better domestically but foreign is so strong that we’ll do over $100 million worldwide. It’s at $90 now, with about five or six major countries to go and a lot of small ones. So, we’ll probably do $110 million. It’s not the worst thing in the world that ever happened.”

So let’s break it down, the movie cost $40,000,000 to make, and the expected gross is $110,000,000… you don’t have to be Carol Vorderman to figure out that that’s a profit of $70,000,000. If this is underwhelming then what does a flick have to net to be considered a smash?! The mind boggles that these figures were solely responsible for Industry Analysts and movie journos the world over to declare this franchise dead.

Thankfully Harvey W seems to have his head screwed on:

“I’m sure he’s going to do a sequel.” (We’ll go out on a limb here and presume he’s talking about Wes Craven. Though it’s debatable that writer Kevin Williamson is actually the most integral element to the success of this series, at least from a fan perspective that is.)

Boom! Straight from the horse’s mouth. Done deal.

*You can probably tell that I was a fan. Though I do have my niggles – definitely thought they bailed on a very exciting opportunity to propel the story in a different direction in the final 10 minutes, instead they wrote themselves into a bit of a dead-end in terms of further entries. (Hope that was vague enough for the folks who are waiting for DVD.)
