Hot on the heels of last week’s THE CAVES OF STEEL announcement comes more Asmiov news, this time regarding the long-mooted adaptation of his FOUNDATION series. Seems Sony Pictures are finally ready to move forward…

In demand screenwriter Dante Harper (we’ll be seeing his work first in next year’s HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS) is the latest to be hired to tackle the ambitious script, replacing FALLING SKIES creator Robert Rodat and his previous draft.

Director Roland Emmerich (INDEPENDECE DAY) has been attached to the project since 2009, but it remains to be seen whether he will stay onboard if Sony decide to fast track the project (he’s currently busy with his other sci-fi epic SINGULARITY). And to be honest we’re kinda hoping he’ll remain too busy, especially since he’s previously pitched FOUNDATION as his AVATAR…

“Probably now all big movies have to be 3-D. It’s not only the effect of 3-D, ‘Avatar’ has just shown that if you do a movie in 3-D, you can ask for more money and that’s the trick. I think now everybody who does bigger movies has to shoot them in 3-D. I think there’s no way around it. I was on the set of ‘Avatar’ and I saw how it worked and I really thought, ‘That’s the ultimate way of making movies.’”

Hmmm. Not quite sure we quite agree with you there, Roland. The oft-derided director also suggested that, like AVATAR, he’ll be leaning heavily on mo-cap techniques, but no surprise there really.

For those unfamiliar, FOUNDATION tells the tale of Hari Seldon, a ‘psycho-historian’ who foresees the fall of the Galactic Empire and the thirty-thousand year ‘dark age’ we’ll be plunged into as a result. Crikey.

We’ll be sure to keep you in the loop as and when more details emerge.

Are you hoping Emmerich remains on board, or would you rather another director take over? And if so, who? Share your thoughts in the Comments below or on Twitter @Starburst_Mag
