Currently doing the press rounds for the acclaimed film WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN, director Lynne Ramsay has revealed to Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode’s long running film show that she is knee deep in pre-production of a science fiction interpretation of MOBY DICK.

The classic Herman Melville tale concerned a man who lost his leg after being attacked by a white whale. That man Captain Ahab then leads his crew on a suicide mission to capture and kill the whale as he is blinded by his need for revenge. Ramsay said of her take:

“I’m working on something loosely based on that, and its science fiction. So we are creating a whole new world and a new alien” she then went on to say “It’s a very psychological piece, mainly taking place in the ship, a bit like DAS BOOT so it’s quite claustrophobic”.

Ramsay is currently still writing the screenplay but has done a lot of pre-visualisation already and has a teaser trailer ready to go. There is no word on which studio is backing this or indeed when we will see it, but this sounds like an intriguing prospect. I love it when acclaimed indie directors get all science fiction on us and a director currently enjoying as much acclaim as Lynne Ramsay taking on a big sci-fi project is testament to the ongoing appeal of the genre to filmmakers.
