Yup, looks like it. Seems Warner Bros have finally figured out a way to bring it in for around $90m as opposed to the potentially studio-crippling $200m it was going to cost when original directors The Hughes Brothers were attached.

Jaume Collet-Serra, director of the underrated horror flick ORPHAN, is Warner’s filmmaker of choice, and they’re reportedly looking at TRON: LEGACY star Garrett Hedlund to replace the 47 year old Keanu Reeves to play the teenage protagonist Kaneda (yeah, always struck me as odd too that one). Encouragingly, original writer/director Katsuhiro Otomo is also on board in an executive producing role.

It’ll be interesting to see if the team can even come close to the scale and spectacle of the 1988 anime, but with such a truncated budget it seems like they’ve got their work cut out for them.

Shooting is scheduled for early next year with a potential 2013 release date.
