Whilst we all await plot details concerning the next STAR TREK adventure, we can at least rest easy that JJ Abrams will once again be taking the reins. The first instalment of the new STAR TREK timeline/reboot was brilliant, it may have fiddled with established continuity but was the breath of fresh air the stale franchise needed. Not only was it a new take on a decades old franchise that was well past its best, but it proved to be a damn entertaining film too. When my girlfriend eagerly awaits the next STAR TREK in cinemas you know it’s a sign that they did something right.

This news may either upset you or please you depending how old you are and which continuity you hold in the highest regard. It seems that to bridge the gap between the two movies in the new continuity, IDW comics will publish re-interpretations of classic trek episodes in comic form with the new Chris Pine / Zachary Quinto versions of the characters. Now before you set your phasers on stun, I also hear that the series of comics will introduce new characters and situations that will then feed into the new film due in cinemas in 2013.

Comic writer Mike Johnson and supervisor and co-script writer Bob Orci mentioned this in an interview with Startrek.com. Where Mike Johnson will handle the new interpretation, Orci will be overseeing and seeing where he can put in little details in relation to the next movie. Mike Johnson says:

“…in the way that the “Countdown” series set up back-story for the last movie. It’s fantastic to have Bob’s input, because he can steer us clear of story elements that might conflict with what’s coming up in the next movie, and we can lay in subtle clues to what’s coming up so that once you see the new movie you can go back and see how it evolved in the comics.“

They also go on to say that each episode will take place over two issues. What do you think about this, is this a smart move or is it sacrilege even in comic book form?
