Warner Bros are no doubt more than a little perturbed that their Jewel in the crown, the HARRY POTTER cash cow, is swiftly coming to an end. So the search is on for a natural successor…

Have they found it in THE LOST YEARS OF MERLIN? Based on the series of fantasy books by T.A. Barron, the first film will introduce us to a young Merlin – who wakes on the shores of Wales with no memory how he got there – and follows him through his life, exploring his powers and eventually becoming the mythical wizard and aid to King Arthur himself.

Boy wizard? Check. Mysterious past? Check. So far, so good!

Ed Whitworth will pen the screenplay, which will purportedly combine the first two novels in the series.

Hmmm. I think Warner Brothers’ desperation is a little bit transparent with this one. Audiences are savvy, even the youngest of them can smell a Potter rip-off a mile away – witness the box office failure of PERCY JACKSON & THE LIGHTENING THIEF for evidence of this!

Expect THE LOST YEARS OF MERLIN summer 2013. And if successful, THE FIRES OF MERLIN in 2014, THE MIRROR OF MERLIN in 2015, and THE WINGS OF MERLIN in 2016. Probably.
