Extras bits n’ bobs from this week’s genre news!

* Kevin Costner is in talks to join the cast of Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED as a villain alongside the previously announced Leonardo DiCaprio. Loving the left-field choices so far, and this is looking to be quite the career comeback for Costner given his other high-profile role in the upcoming MAN OF STEEL. Could audiences have finally forgiven him for THE POSTMAN?

* Neca Toys are getting closer to officially revealing their EVIL DEAD 2 action figure series. Here’s another couple of un-official behind the scenes preview peeks (possessed Ash looks awesome!)…

* Great news, folks – New line’s proposed ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake is officially dead! Thank the maker we no longer have to suffer Gerald bloody Butler rockin’ Kurt’s eye-patch for the lacklustre Len Wiseman (UNDERWORLD). Dodged a bullet there.

* As has director John Carpenter (he’s gotta be getting fed up with Hollywood butchering his movies) who’s about to branch out into the comic-book medium with ASYLUM. In an interesting move, makers Graphicly will be releasing the first volume online only, where it will feature a brand new score by Carpenter himself. Can’t wait for him to dust off his Synth! Expect an update on this later in the week when the project will be making its Comic Con debut. In the meantime, here’s a preview of the artwork…

* In further comic-book news, Top Cow’s THE DARKNESS – the tale of a Mafia bod with mystical powers – is getting the big-screen treatment from Mandeville Films, with original creator Marc Silvestri on board as Executive Producer.

* Here’s the official synopsis and first set pic from Francis Ford Coppola’s mysterious supernatural flick – “A writer with a declining career arrives in a small town as part of his book tour and gets caught up in a murder mystery involving a young girl. That night in a dream, he is approached by a mysterious young ghost named V. He’s unsure of her connection to the murder in the town, but is grateful for the story being handed to him. Ultimately he is led to the truth of the story, surprised to find that the ending has more to do with his own life than he could ever have anticipated.” Sounds good! And I’m relieved it’s not actually a film version of the popular chocolate bar, (they’re adapting everything these days, so it’s not really beyond the realms of possibility!) The movie stars Elle Fanning, Bruce Dern, Val Kilmer and Ben Chaplin.

* Ron Howard’s ambitious adaptation of Stephen King’s DARK TOWER has officially been shelved by studio Universal. Committing to a trilogy of movies plus a couple of TV mini-series to tell the tale was always going to be a bit of a financial gamble, Ron.

* Feast your eyes on the official teaser poster for Joss Whedon’s THE AVENGERS! (Ok, maybe not. It’s a lil’ on the bland side to be honest. We’d prefer if Marvel Studios just went ahead and released the leaked one officially)…

* Aaaand finally, we’ve all hopefully seen the impressive fan-made trailer (if not, check it out here, it’s awesome), now AMC have released their first official teaser for THE WALKING DEAD season 2. Warning – though short, it is pretty brutal. Enjoy…

Was that in the wrong ratio or does Andrew Lincoln look seriously emaciated? He looks hungrier than the zombies he’s pummelling.
