This news couldn’t have disappointed me more. We honestly thought we had this sussed!

So they’re remaking THE EVIL DEAD, that we knew. But that soon lead to the idea that it wouldn’t necessarily have to feature the same characters, and instead focus on another group of folks who encounter the infamous cabin in the woods. That means the old movies could very well still exist in the remake’s canon, right? (In the same way they’re approaching THE THING remake). Then came the news that Bruce Campbell would not only produce, but cameo also – leading to our new theory that we would actually get to see Ash himself make an appearance after all! Okay, so it wouldn’t have been the EVIL DEAD 4 us deadheads have waited patiently 19 years for, but still.

Well, we were WRONG, (regarding the latter that is – turns out they are going with the all new character approach).

Today, Bruce Campbell crushed any hope we had of ever seeing him reprise that character again with this devastating Tweet in response to the fan question “Who are they casting for Ash?“:

No Ash character currently,” followed by “ED remake is a re-telling. All bets are off & all involved love the new approach.

Missing a trick there in my opinion.

Unless… they’re trying to keep the Ash cameo under wraps. Ooooooo!

THE (new) EVIL DEAD will be produced by the original triumvirate of Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Robert Tapert, but will this time be directed by Fede Alvarez (best known for his acclaimed short film PANIC ATTACK, watch it here). The only thing that really gives me any hope with this thing is the involvement of long-time fan (of the film, not us) and Oscar winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (JUNO, JENNIFER’S BODY), who’s one of the most unique voices in American screenwriting today. The movie will start shooting early 2012 for a 2013 release.
