UPDATED:

Postergate Part 2! Remember when we reported on Sony’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN one-sheet that turned out to be a complete phoney? Well, seems movie journos the world over might have been duped again! ‘SUPER 8’ PR Reps have just got in touch and had this to say:

“The painted poster is a fan one as far we know, all the images are from the trailer so it has to be!!”

Thanks for getting in touch, guys! Well if that is the work of a fan (how much time must he/she have on their hands?!) then I hereby retract my opinion. Got to give the artist some props. But that kid still looks like a Gelfling.

Scroll down to the bottom of the piece to see the poster in question…

Everything we’ve seen of J.J. Abram’s upcoming monster(?)-movie SUPER 8 has got us psyched so far…

…from last year’s masterful teaser…

…to the brilliant, Speilbergian theatrical trailer…

…to the CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND inspired Japanese teaser poster…

But for me they’ve just dropped their first clanger with this unsightly thing…

Yikes! Poor Drew Struzan. The legendary poster artist (who this piece is ‘lovingly’ paying tribute to) retired from the industry when studios started to favour cheap n’ nasty photoshopped one-sheets over actual art. I hope Speilberg and J.J. at least gave Struzan a courtesy call before commissioning this imitator – surely he’d have come out of retirement to stop this monstrosity being produced!

Super bad. And is that a Gelfling from DARK CRYSTAL looking over the camera-operator’s shoulder?

Dodgy poster aside, all signs still point to the movie being excellent. Paramount will release SUPER 8 in the UK on August 5th. Lucky folks Stateside will get their chance to find out just exactly what’s in that box June 10th. No spoilers, please.
