UPDATED

So who will play the titular tortured teen? Starburst has an update on two possible contenders…

So ridiculously ill suited is the first actress that we instantly dismissed the suggestion as crazed internet babbling, but it seems the rumour refuses to die, forcing our hand. I don’t know about you, but when reading King’s novel I’m not exactly picturing the shy, awkward, abused Carrie White to look like this….

That’s right. Megan Fox is currently vying for the role. Told you it was absurd.

Sure, she’s not going to look like that in the movie, but come on. Unless they’re planning to transform her ala Charlize Theron in MONSTER then it’s just plain insulting. Audiences en masse go to see Megan Fox movies to watch her bend over motorcycles suggestively, I can’t see a studio having the guts to throw that commodity away.

The next name is Oscar-nominated actress Haillee Steinfeld, last seen stealing the show as Marion Ross in the Coen Brothers’ TRUE GRIT.

Now this is more like it. The Best Supporting Actress nom was well deserved (even though slightly puzzling considering her character was actually the lead) and she could believably pull off Carrie White’s physicality.

Sure, it’s unlikely anybody could actually top Sissy Spacek’s performance in the original, but at least Steinfeld’s consideration suggests someone at MGM has their head screwed on.

“Wait, what?! They’re remaking CARRIE now?” Yup. Read our previous story below…

The keys ‘r’, ‘e’, ‘m’, ‘a’, and ‘k’ on my laptop are slowly wearing away I swear, as Hollywood announces yet another classic movie is to get the reboot treatment. This time it’s the turn of Brian De Palma’s 1976 horror classic CARRIE, which saw both its leads nominated for Oscars.

MGM and Screen Gems have hired writer Roberto Aguirre-Sarcasa to retell Stephen King’s story of Carrie White, a painfully shy teenage girl struggling to cope with her abusive mother, asshole classmates… and the slowly developing telekinetic powers that threaten to consume her.

Aguirre-Sarcasa is no stranger to King’s work having successfully adapted THE STAND to comic book form, so it’s entirely possible he will use the original source material for inspiration, rather than do what the previous two remakes* did and merely ape De Palma’s version. Badly.

Expect CARRIE to be met with general audience ambivalence late 2012.

*Yep, unbelievably this will be the FOURTH crack at CARRIE (if you include the terrible 1992 flick THE RAGE: CARRIE 2, which we should seeing as its plot is near identical!)

Stephen King spoke with EW regarding the above, and had this to say:

“I’ve heard rumblings about a ‘Carrie’ remake, as I have about ‘The Stand’ and ‘It.’ Who knows if it will happen? The real question is why, when the original was so good? I mean, not ‘Casablanca,’ or anything, but a really good horror-suspense film, much better than the book. Piper Laurie really got her teeth into the bad-mom thing. Although Lindsay Lohan as Carrie White… hmmm. It would certainly be fun to cast. I guess I could get behind it if they turned the project over to one of the Davids: Lynch or Cronenberg.”

Well said, sir! And good call on Lynch or Cronenberg – now that I would pay to see!
