Earlier this year, production company Alcon Entertainment scored the rights to Ridley Scott’s seminal sc-fi flick BLADE RUNNER. While the deal restricted them from doing an out and out remake of the 1982 original, it did give them the keys to the kingdom in terms of telling stories within that same universe, to expand on the mythology as they saw fit. There was one downside to this however – Ridley Scott was not involved. Until today.

It’s reported that Mr Scott is now in negotiations to come on board and actually direct the new BLADE RUNNER movie once his PROMETHEUS duties have wrapped. Maybe revisiting his original ALIEN universe has given him a fresh perspective on how to approach this type of film. These movies exist in their own worlds, with infinite possibilities in terms of character and storyline. The word ‘sequel’ no longer has to be a dirty word. It’s not known whether Ford will return as Deckard (nor is it necessary given the scope of that universe), but it’s reported that he is aware of the project’s existence. Have Alcon Entertainment already approached him to reprise his role? No doubt. Would the notoriously picky actor jump on board without Ridley Scott’s involvement? Unlikely. It’s easy to assume that the project hasn’t gained any significant momentum in the past due to Scott’s absence – but with him now fully on board it lends the film credibility and integrity. Maybe we’ll finally find out whether Deckard is actually a Replicant or not!

Scratch that last bit. Seems we needn’t concern ourselves with whether or not Ford will return after all. Talking to The LA Times today, Andrew Kosove of Alcon Entertainment had this to say:

“In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott. But if you’re asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no. This is a total reinvention, and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting.”

Kosove also added that we won’t be seeing this movie anytime before 2014 at the earliest (by which time surely flying cars will be a reality anyway!).

Still excited?

Obviously we’ll continue to keep a close eye on this one, so stay tuned for more updates!

Now Ridley’s back on board, would you like to see another BLADE RUNNER movie? Are you saddened that Ford wont return? Let us know in the comments below!
