Teen Wolf, the iconic 80’s film is to be given a brand new look via MTV and a new series. Translating films to TV series hasn’t always worked, and it would appear that they are taking a different approach with this.

The original film was hardly a werewolf film, in fact, it was more a basketball film. The transformation wasn’t anything special either.

The new show is going to be dark, sexy, surprising and scary. The show’s creators want to take it up to the level of stuff like True Blood and The Vampire Diaries.

The transformation from a 90-minute comedy film into a slick and stylish eight and a half hour series isn’t without its difficulties.

The original film followed Michael J. Fox as Scott Howard through his high school years. Scott is on a terrible basketball team and fancies a girl who is spoken for. Soon he discovers his weird family gene which allows him to change into a werewolf.

Scott then realises he is amazing at basketball as a werewolf and begins to spend more and more time as the creature. Soon the team are soaring high and in the finals. The end of the film doesn’t contain any werewolves though as Scott refuses to change. They still go on to win the game though.

So how is the new series going to be different?

MTV have hired director Russel Mulcahy and producer Jeff Davis to take the show away from its origins and give it a brand new look. That includes it not being a comedy and being more about the werewolf. The series won’t be as focused on basketball either.

They’re going to have a slight Lost Boys film feel about the episodes, which also being an 80’s film should mean there will be certain similarities.

A good werewolf film tends to succeed or fail based on the transformation of the wolf. The creators of the show knew this so they have two different types of lycan in the film (with a third making a brief appearance). When it came to the appearance of the wolf  they looked at what didn’t work, and then did the opposite, looking at everything from An American Werewolf in London to The Howling of the Wolf to Wolverine.

The story will revolve around five main characters, the main of which will be played by Tyler Posey, who you may not have heard of, which is likely as he hasn’t done much.

The series is set to air on June 5th in America on MTV. This means that the UK may have to wait a while for the new series, but it does look promising and could be worth the wait.
