Following the surprising news earlier this week that the Matrix franchise was being resurrected, screenwriter Zak Penn has moved to add further intrigue to this project.

Ruling out that any new entry in the fan favourite sci-fi franchise will be a reboot or remake, Penn took to Twitter to explain, “All I can say at this point is no one could or should REBOOT ‘The Matrix’. People who know ‘Animatrix’ and the comics understand. Can’t comment yet except to say that the words ‘reboot’ and ‘remake’ were from an article. Let’s stop responding to inaccurate news. Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of ‘The Matrix’? Yes. Because it’s a brilliant idea that generates great stories.”

Penn then added, “Look at what people are doing with the Xmen universe. Between Logan and Legion and Deadpool, does anyone want them to stop? Not me.”

As for his previous work, Zak Penn will be well known to genre fans for his story and screenplay contributions to the likes of X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, The Incredible Hulk and Avengers Assemble as well as being involved in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Ready Player One.

The only other detail known at this stage bar Penn’s involvement is that that the reported frontrunner to headline this new film is Creed’s Michael B. Jordan.

Again, expect to be hearing a whole lot more on this new Matrix movie as and when it develops.
