With yesterday seeing it revealed that David Gordon Green and Danny McBride are writing the new Halloween movie – which Green will also direct – now comes an update on just where the film will pick up in relation to the rest of the beloved horror franchise.

We last visited Haddonfield back in 2009 with Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, and it seemed unlikely that any new film would follow the narrative established with Zombie’s two movies. So then we look back to 2002’s Halloween: Resurrection, a film that went sour for poor Michael Myers when Busta Rhymes pulled out his finest kung fu moves. One other option, of course, is to do a(nother) reboot for The Shape. But thinking about it, one particularly interesting idea is to look at having this new movie follow in the footsteps of 1981’s Halloween II. And it’s now been revealed that that is seemingly what is going to happen.

Speaking to CinemaBlend, Danny McBride confirmed, “You know, it’s not a remake. It’s gonna continue the story of Michael Myers in a really grounded way. And for our mythology, we’re focussing mainly in the first two movies and what that sets up and then where the story can go from there.”

Going on to play down fears of the movie featuring some laughs, McBride added, “Green and I are definitely going to do a straight-up horror. Halloween has always been one of my favourite movies of all time. There’s a simplicity and an efficiency to that first one that I think allows the movies just to be scary as hell. And so Green and I, our approach is to get back to that.”

If you remember back, the first two Halloween movies took place on the same night – the night he came home – with the second film picking up from the exact moment the first film ended. From there, we saw Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode taken to the local hospital, where she was again hunted by the unrelenting figure of Michael Myers.

At present, this new Halloween movie is set for an October 19th, 2018 release. As well as Green and McBride involved, the Master of Horror himself, John Carpenter, is on board as an executive producer and may even do the film’s music.
