With New York Comic Con having been rather Marvel-heavy so far, some further Marvel news is that Disney XD is developing a new animated Spider-Man series.

The news was revealed over the weekend, with the new show to be called simply Marvel’s Spider-Man. The series “tells the story of an unsure but courageous teen who has to figure out how to be a super hero from the very beginning”.

On this news, Disney XD’s Marc Buhaj said, “Spider-Man is the biggest action hero in the world. He is an iconic character whose duality makes him both relatable and aspirational for the Disney XD audience. We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Marvel in this new original series that offers a fresh take on a beloved classic that will engage both new and existing Spidey fans with its compelling drama, exciting action and the signature sense of comedy.”

Marvel’s Cort Lane added, “We’ve been secretly nurturing Marvel’s Spider-Man for years now, so we are thrilled to finally announce it. The simple title reflects a back-to-basics approach – the story of an ordinary teen, Peter Parker, who suddenly finds himself with strange new powers and overwhelming responsibility. And thanks to story editor Kevin Shinick (Robot Chicken) and supervising director Philip Pignotti (Marvel’s Avengers Assemble), it’s just filled with hear and humour.”

We’ve had many a Wall-crawler-based animated series (or cartoon, for us older folk) over the decades, with the two most recent being the excellent Spectacular Spider-Man and the solid Ultimate Spider-Man. In fact, Ultimate Spider-Man will come to a close with a two-part finale in January, which paves the way for Marvel’s Spider-Man to arrive on the small screen at a TBC 2017 date.
