It might be PROMETHEUS which divides fans most, but it’s the third and fourth instalments in the ALIEN franchise which sting most fans. This was doubly true when DISTRICT 9 and CHAPPiE director Neill Blomkamp’s posted concept art for his ALIEN sequel on Instagram. While many were dazzled by the impressive art (us included) it wasn’t without a sense of yearning. The ALIEN film fans deserved seemed forever out of grasp.

But now news comes news that Blomkamp has said he could still end up making the film, with 20th Century Fox excited to get behind the project. Speaking to Uproxx, the director stated that he began working on the concept images during post-production on the upcoming CHAPPiE (which also stars Sigourney Weaver).

Fox is more than happy to let Blomkamp make the film, but he himself has stated, “I’m the problem. Fox, they would make it. Like, tomorrow. They would make it.” The director refers to his pet project as a ‘whole’ standalone story, stating “. . . if it’s going to happen, it has to be on my terms. So, I came up with it and I’m bringing this to you. It’s not like, ‘Would you like to do SPIDER-MAN 36?’ I still love it, I love the idea of the movie and I produced way more art than I put out .’

The next instalment in the franchise, whether Blomkamp’s ALIEN goes ahead or not, is Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS sequel, due for a March 2016 release.
