MTV, in a quest to find its very own GAME OF THRONES, has turned to the annuals of sweeping epic fantasy. For fans of the genre lawyer-cum-writer Terry Brooks will be a familiar name, responsible for the impressive SHANNARA series, among others. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has announced that the show is getting a full ten episode first series.

Spearheaded by executive producer and IRON MAN director Jon Favreau alongside Al Gough and Miles Millar, the duo behind Superman origin story SMALLVILLE, SHANNARA will be helmed by Jonathan Liebesman, director of the upcoming TMNT.

The first series, interestingly enough, will be based on the second book in Brooks’ series, THE ELFSTONES OF SHANNARA. The rights were bought back in 2007 and, in a world where THRONES is as popular as it’s proved, a slew of similar shows were bound to start appearing.

SHANNARA may be more in the classic fantasy vein, but THRONES may just have a serious contender.
