With X-MEN: APOCALYPSE confirmed to follow this month’s X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, it’s also been revealed that a third solo Wolverine film is in the works. Nothing has been confirmed on that point, although star Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold have both talked about how they’re searching for the right story in what would likely be the last outing for Jackman as Logan. Speaking to Collider, it appears that the star is keen to film the two films back-to-back due to the ridiculous workout regimen he has to undergo to maintain the Wolverine physique.

On the troubles of getting into such shape, Jackman said, “I found out about X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST a month before I finished THE WOLVERINE, so I was already planning on my cheat meals. It’s tough to get there, physically, but once you’re there, it’s easier to maintain it.”

Recently, producer Lauren Schuler Donner confirmed, “We’re trying. We’re absolutely trying,” when asked about possibly filming a third solo Wolverine effort straight after APOCALYPSE.

On whether there’s a story in place for the third film, Jackman revealed that there is something already in mind. He revealed, “Wolverine will be in a completely different head space, world space, in every way somewhere different that you haven’t seen him before.”

Early speculation suggests that some spin on the classic OLD MAN LOGAN comic arc may come to fruition in the sequel to THE WOLVERINE, although that’s merely rumour at this stage.

Having frequently talked about how somebody else may have to take over the Wolverine gig sooner rather than later, it appears that the 45-year-old Jackman may be calling time on his Logan days over the next few years. If he were to appear in both X-MEN: APOCALYPSE and another solo Wolverine movie then that would bring Jackman’s appearances as Wolverine to a whopping nine! When he does finally hang up the claws, is it best to leave the Wolverine character dormant for a while or is there somebody else who could step into the role?
