With Roland Emmerich and 20th Century Fox currently developing INDEPENDENCE DAY 2, it’s now been confirmed by Deadline that Will Smith will definitely not be returning as Captain Steven Hiller.

When Emmerich first announced his sequel – not to mention the now-on-hold INDEPENDENCE DAY 3 – the director reported that the Fresh Prince would not be back due to how much he would cost the production. Over the next few months that seemed to change, with Smith in, out, in, out, shaking it all about, and now definitely out. Not to worry, for Emmerich had taken contingency plans and actually planned two scripts; one with Smith involved, one without Big Willy Style. It now seems that Emmerich and Fox will be moving forward with the latter. Given Smith’s recent sci-fi efforts, it could be seen by some as a good thing that he won’t be returning. I guess this gives him ample time to focus on his rap career.

At present, INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 is pencilled in for a 1st July, 2016 release, with Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum both set to be involved.
