Contrary to previous reports, Will Smith is now in talks to kick more alien ass as Captain Steven Hiller in the upcoming INDEPENDENCE DAY sequel.

Speaking to Digital Spy, director Roland Emmerich said:

“I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn’t want to do it at first. Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen.”

So, far from anything concrete, but it would be great to see the old gang back together – if this does come to anything, he’ll be re-joining Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, who’ve already been confirmed to return (though surely Pullman’s term as president must have finished by now). With the Earth under alien threat once more, what famous landmarks will be destroyed this time? Hopefully, Emmerich won’t return the action to the White House again – after all, that’s the theme of his latest film, WHITE HOUSE DOWN.

The new INDEPENDENCE DAY film will be released in either 2015 or 2016 – a whole two decades after 1996’s original.
