After some speculation on who might be involved, Blizzard and Legendry’s upcoming World of Warcraft adaptation has found its lead actor: Travis Fimmel. Star of History Channel’s Vikings, the choice was revealed by Variety magazine after speculation of the involvement of several major actors. While not the most prolific choice on the list (Colin Farrell’s name has come up a few times after all) his previous work at least shows experience with handling a sword and appearing in medieval settings.

Vikings is still in the middle of getting its second season going, but this is hardly the first time we have seen a major series actor depart for a role in another production. Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion saw Nikolaj Coster-Waldu (Game of Thrones’ Jamie Lannister) making an appearance for several action scenes. Unlike here however, that was as a background character and Jamie spent of much the second season locked up in a cage. Playing two lead characters, it’s unknown what scheduling issues or limitations may arise.

Warcraft is currently set for release on the 18th December next year.
