We’ve not heard many rumblings on the WORLD OF WARCRAFT adaptation since last January, when it was announced that MOON’s Duncan Jones would be the one to guide the successful MMO to our screens for a 2015 release, but today comes the first slice of casting news. According to reports, it seems that the filmmaker has reached out to Colin Farrell and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL’s Paula Patton for lead roles. As for the specifics of these characters, there’s no further details available at the minute, as Jones and screenwriter Charles Leavitt (K-PAX) are keeping schtum on just about everything. Which, quite frankly, is just plain mean.

WARCRAFT is being produced by the powerhouse that is Legendary Pictures (DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY, MAN OF STEEL, PACIFIC RIM to name just a few), so this thing has potential to be huge. And with it being an MMO, there’s no fixed narrative to adhere to like normal videogame adaps, just a pre-existing world filled with fantastical fare to be mined from. Dragons, orcs, zombies, aliens, werewolves, weird… Kung Fu Panda lookin’ dudes; you name it, it’s right there. This franchise has unlimited potential. Let’s hope Jones and co are able to once and for all prove that game adaptations don’t have to be dreadful.

WARCRAFT will begin shooting in January 2014, so expect more very soon.

Some new candidates have emerged: LOOPER’s Paul Dano, STAR TREK’s Anton Yelchin, HELL ON WHEELS’ Anson Mount and VIKINGS’ Travis Fimmel are all reportedly reading for roles too.
