Sony Pictures has already confirmed that they are crafting Spidey spin-offs THE SINISTER SIX and VENOM, with some of the groundwork laid in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 for the Sinister Six team. Speaking to Grantland, director Marc Webb has been talking about how things are going to play out in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3. Warning, there are some THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 SPOILERS ahead.

Webb revealed, “I had to talk to Drew Goddard and make sure these things were going to be played out in the future universe. There are some very specific plans, for example, for Ock and for Vulture or for the man in the hat at the end of the first movie. All those things emerge with varying degrees of emphasis.”

Now the “man in the hat” who appeared at the end of Webb’s first Spider-Man movie has been confirmed as being Gustav Friers, who is better known as The Gentleman. In certain tellings of the Sinister Six team’s origins, The Gentleman is the one responsible for putting the villainous team together. Could that be the case in this cinematic world that Webb and Sony have put together?

As well as teasing certain villains, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 also killed off Peter Parker’s love interest, Gwen Stacy. Initially Shailene Woodley shot some scenes as Mary Jane Watson for the second of Sony’s rebooted Wallcrawler pictures. When those scenes were ultimately cut, including one where MJ meets Gwen, the future of Woodley as Mary Jane was thrown into question. When asked whether Peter Parker will hit the MJ jackpot, tiger, in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3, Webb was non-committal. “Will Peter Parker love again? When relationships end, it’s very difficult to imagine emerging from that. I think that’s, emotionally, where he’s going to start off in the next movie.”

Yeah, it’s particularly hard to move on from a relationship when your ‘one true’ has died right before your eyes as a result of your best friend going batshit crazy.

Despite THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 splitting opinions, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 is already confirmed for a 10th June, 2016 global release, with a UK release pencilled in for 27th May, 2016.
