Last year, Fede Alvarez’s EVIL DEAD gave audiences something rare: a surprisingly good remake/reboot of a beloved horror movie that offered both nods to the original and fresh ideas of its own. After impressing fans and critics alike, a sequel was immediately talked up. At the same time, it was also discussed how Sam Raimi would be developing ARMY OF DARKNESS 2 in the hope of possibly tying that world to the world that Alvarez was putting together. All has been a little quiet in recent months, but Alvarez has been giving an update on all of these matters to ShockTillYouDrop.com.

Alvarez explained, “Sam and Rob Tapert and I are good friends and we talk to one another often and we’re always coming up with new ideas and projects. Sam is teasing ARMY OF DARKNESS 2, which he is working on the script with his brother, but at the same time EVIL DEAD 2 is something we definitely want to do at some point. But part of the reason I think the last one was successful is because Sam took his time to find the right team of people to do it.”

He continued, “We took the time to find the right script and all of that. If you had EVIL DEAD 2 coming out the following year, it’s just for the market, not because you’ve found the right idea. It takes time to find the right idea and that’s what we’re doing. It’s always in the background and always in our heads. And every time I talk with Sam, we’re bouncing around ideas to find what would be the perfect sequel.”

Alvarez’s EVIL DEAD took $97 million at the global box office last year. That’s not exactly massive numbers, but the fact that it was low budget and that it did decent numbers on home release added to the clamour for a sequel.

Safe to say, at the announcement of an EVIL DEAD redo, we were left shaking our heads. In truth, Alvarez’s movie, whether it was particularly needed or not, was one of the better remakes of the last decade or so. And as a result, it appears that a sequel will appear at some point, and it’s certainly encouraging to hear Alvarez saying that they’re not just going to do a sequel for the sake of doing a sequel. The same goes for ARMY OF DARKNESS 2.

In the meantime, Alvarez has helmed the episode of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN: THE SERIES that airs tomorrow night on Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey network.
