Jean-Claude Van Damme as a cop embroiled in a sci-fi-tastic time-travel plot? Yep, that’d be 1994’s TIMECOP. Despite a 2004 Jason Scott Lee-starring sequel and a 1997 spin-off TV series, the TIMECOP franchise was thought lost in, err, time. Not so! That’s right, a reboot is in the works.

Universal has been trying to get a reboot of TIMECOP off the ground for years, and things are finally moving forward. The studio has hired JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND’s writing duo of Mark and Brian Gunn to pen the script for this redo. It’s said that the plot of the rejigged TIMECOP will be a more grounded police story, with the sci-fi elements toned down. And if the grounded approach wasn’t enough to turn off fans of the original, there’s also no Jean-Claude Van Damme involvement (sorry, Starburst Shauna).

The first TIMECOP movie grossed a global $102 million, which is a figure that a modern-day JCVD-starring flick can only dream of. Still, Van Damme’s always got the UNIVERSAL SOLDIER franchise to fall back on.

Expect to hear more on this new incarnation of TIMECOP as it develops.
